MERS coronavirus infections have soared in Saudi Arabia ahead of the hajj pilgrimage, killing three people and forcing a Riyadh hospital to close its emergency ward, officials and newspapers said Thursday. The Saudi Gazette said authorities shut the emergency ward at one of the capital’s largest hospitals... "after at least 46 people, including hospital staff" contracted the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.
China factory data fuels slowdown fears
Factory activity in China shrank at its fastest pace in more than six years in August, data suggests. The private Caixin/Markit manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) dropped to 47.1 from 47.8 in July. A figure below 50 indicates contraction. The data triggered another sell off in Chinese shares, which ended the day down more than 4%.
North Korea orders troops on war footing after exchanging fire with South
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered his frontline troops to be on a war footing, state media says, after an exchange of fire with the South across their heavily fortified border. However, it should be noted that the location of Thursday’s earthquake is the precise region of Jericho, known for its city walls that came tumbling down, and also the area of Sodom and Gomorra.
