Hundreds missing after 'biggest human tragedy' in years
A boat believed to be crowded with 700 migrants capsized in the waters north of Libya overnight, leaving at least 24 confirmed dead and sparking fears for what could become the Mediterranean's deadliest known migrant sea disaster, Italy's Coast Guard and other officials said Sunday.

Wildfire near Southern California dam threatens 300 homes
An out-of-control wildfire that broke out in a forested basin near a Southern California dam triggered the evacuation of about 300 homes late Saturday, authorities said. The fire, which was reported shortly after 6 p.m. in the Prado Dam Flood Control Basin and spread to 300 acres by early Sunday.

Iran marks Army Day with cries of ‘Death to Israel, US’

Libya crisis: Obama appeals to Gulf states
President Obama has called on Gulf nations to use their influence on Libya's warring factions to help resolve the chaotic situation there. He said those nations had been seen to "fan the flames of military conflict" in the North African country. Libya has been in turmoil since the removal of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

'Mystery disease' kills 18 in Nigeria - officials
A "mysterious" disease has killed at least 18 people in the past several days in south-eastern Nigeria, local officials say. The outbreak started in the Ode-Irele town, Ondo state, and spread rapidly. South African President Jacob Zuma cancelled a state visit to Indonesia on Saturday as officials scrambled to respond to deadly xenophobic violence, with scores of new arrests made in Johannesburg. A foreigner was killed in Johannesburg, where violence erupted earlier this week, following unrest in the eastern port city of Durban, police said. However, they refused to say whether the killing was directly linked to the anti-foreigner attacks that have already claimed at least six lives.

California prepares for historic mandatory cutbacks on water
Californians are going to have to start preparing for a dry summer as the dehydrated state prepares for a water crackdown. In a somewhat controversial move, California water officials drafted a set of mandatory conservation regulations outlining varying degrees to which communities will be required to cut back on water use, ranging from 8 to 36 percent, depending on their history of water consumption.

The quake hit at a depth of 10km some 224km from Fiji at 1552 GMT (11.52pm Singapore time), the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Four Earthquakes Shake Near Logan County
Four earthquakes shook up residents in Logan County, beginning early Friday morning. The first, a 3.9 magnitude quake, struck at approximately 4:08 a.m. Its epicenter was located four miles west of Langston, six miles northeast of Guthrie, and 21 miles north northeast of Edmond at a depth of about two and a half miles.

UN peace envoy to Yemen quits as civil war escalates
The UN peace envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, has resigned after losing support from Gulf countries for his mission in the conflict-riven country. Mr Benomar, a veteran Moroccan diplomat, had recently irked Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations for his handling of so far unsuccessful peace talks between Iranian-allied Houthi rebels in Yemen and the Western and Gulf Arab-backed Yemeni government.
