Pope Francis in Turkey to boost faith ties
Pope Francis is in Turkey for what is described as a historic visit to promote religious dialogue. At the start of his three-day trip he is holding talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. The Pope is due to travel to Istanbul to meet the head of the Orthodox Christian Church. This is only the fourth visit by a pope to Muslim-majority Turkey.

Brisbane storm: Huge clean-up in Queensland
A huge clean-up operation is under way in the Australian city of Brisbane after a severe storm swept across south-east Queensland. The storm produced hailstones the size of golf balls, causing widespread damage. Up to 90,000 homes were without power as winds gusting at 140km/h (85mph) brought down trees and power lines.

Mexican president Pena Nieto to overhaul police
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has announced plans to overhaul the country's municipal police forces after the disappearance of 43 students. He plans to put all local police units under federal control. The students, all trainee teachers, went missing in September after joining a protest in Iguala, Guerrero state.

France, Italy, Belgium to get extra three months on deficit and debt
The EU commission on Friday (28 November) is set to give France, Italy and Belgium three more months to implement deficit-and-debt cutting measures or face fines. It is the first time the commission splits its verdict on national budgets into two parts: acknowledging that France, Italy and Belgium are in breach of the deficit-and-debt rules...but delaying a decision on the consequences until March.

Syria denies targeting civilians, tells US better to criticize ISIS
Syria rejected as "fabricated" US accusations that its forces are targeting civilians with air strikes and said Washington would do better to criticize hardline Islamic State insurgents... The US State Department said on Wednesday it was "horrified" by Syrian government bombings in Raqqa province which it said had killed "dozens of civilians and demolished residential areas".

French FM: Paris will recognize Palestinian state if peace efforts fail
France said on Friday it was working with partners on a "final" diplomatic push to overcome the impasse between Israelis and Palestinians, including by setting a two-year timeframe to end the conflict through a UN-backed resolution. "If this final effort to reach a negotiated solution fails, then France will have to do what it takes by recognizing without delay the Palestinian state," Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told parliament.

Will OPEC bankrupt US shale producers?
he OPEC's contentious decision to keep its production target, leaving the market with a supply glut, could trigger a wave of debt defaults by U.S. shale oil producers, warn analysts. The 12-member oil cartel on Thursday said it would stick to its output target of 30 million barrels a day, triggering a sharp decline in oil prices, with U.S. crude futures tumbling nearly $6 to $67.75 on Friday - the lowest since May 2010.

Japan’s two-year note yields dropped below zero for the first time as investors prepared for an auction of the securities today. The Ministry of Finance is scheduled to sell 2.7 trillion yen ($23 billion) of debt maturing in December 2016. Two-year yields reached zero on Nov. 19 after the Bank of Japan decided last month to expand the annual pace of its bond buying to 80 trillion yen. Yields at a sale of three-month treasury bills fell below zero for the first time on Oct. 23.

Gunfire and explosions rocked Kabul as Taliban militants attacked a central district that houses several embassies and foreign compounds, hours after a suicide bomber targeted a British Embassy vehicle, killing six people. Israel's internal security service says it has uncovered a Hamas cell in the West Bank that was planning to carry out a series of attacks in Jerusalem. Shin Bet said it had arrested more than 30 militants who were trained abroad, and recovered weapons and explosives. They planned to kidnap Israelis and their targets for attack included a football stadium in Jerusalem and the city's light rail system, it alleged.

Australia faces growing budget deficit, says report
Australia's budget deficit could expand by billions of dollars more than expected, according to a new report. Risks from economic shocks to the government's budget revenues were "weighted to the downside", said a Parliamentary Budget Office analysis. The 2014-15 budget was particularly susceptible to slower-than-forecast labour productivity growth and a weaker terms of trade, the report said.

Ebola vaccine 'promising' say scientists after human trial
The first human trial of an experimental vaccine against Ebola suggests that it is safe and may help the immune system to combat the virus. Twenty volunteers were immunised in the United States. Scientists at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) described the results as "promising". The research is published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

Syria conflict: Raqqa air strikes death toll rises
Almost 100 people are now believed to have died in a series of government air strikes on the Islamic State-held city of Raqqa on Tuesday, activists say. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 52 civilians were killed. One activist from Raqqa told the BBC the only hospital still functioning in the city was finding it difficult to cope with the dozens of wounded.
