GEOMAGNETIC STORM IN PROGRESS, MORE TO COME
A minor G1-class geomagnetic storm is in progress following a CME strike during the early hours of April 20th. The impact sparked auroras over Scandinavia visible despite the brightening spring twilight. This is the first of two CME impacts expected to rattle Earth's magnetic field today. NOAA forecasters expect the second CME to trigger a G2-class geomagnetic storm, which is to say "moderate."

Japan to build military site near disputed Senkaku islands
Japan has begun construction work on a military radar station near a string of islands that is at the centre of a territorial dispute with China. Correspondents say the move will anger Beijing as it may allow Japan to expand surveillance near the Chinese mainland. The new base - on Yonaguni island - is located just 150km (90 miles) from the Japanese-held Senkaku island group, claimed by China as the Diaoyu islands.

Bennett responds to Abbas' threat to disband PA: 'Israel won't stop you'
Economy Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday defiantly chafed at Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ latest threat to resign and disband the autonomous government that has been ruling over the Palestinian areas of Judea and Samaria. ...“If he wants to go, we won’t stop him,” the minister said. “The Jewish people do not negotiate with a gun held against their temple.”

80% of Syrian chemical weapons shipped out: monitors
Syria has shipped out or destroyed approximately 80 per cent of its declared chemical weapons material, the head of the international team overseeing the disarmament process said. Sigrid Kaag, special coordinator of the joint mission of the United Nations and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said if the momentum was sustained, Syria should be able to meet its April 27 deadline to hand over all declared chemical agents.

Ohio couple married 70 years die 15 hours apart
When Helen Felumlee passed away at the age of 92 Saturday morning, her family knew her husband Kenneth Felumlee, 91, wouldn't be slow to follow her. The couple couldn't bear to be apart very long, and Kenneth passed away only 15 1/2 hours after his wife of 70 years. Is US as Religiously Diverse as You Think? 'No' Says Pew Study
While many Americans take pride in the country's religious diversity, a new study by the Pew Research Center shows that the United States cannot be seen as a highly diverse country, at least not from a global perspective. The U.S. ranks 68th out of 232 countries and territories on Pew's Religious Diversity Index, which shows that 95 percent of the country's population is either Christian or religiously unaffiliated, while all other religions combined account for just 5 percent of Americans.

Quake hits near St. Kitts; no damage reported
A magnitude-5.0 earthquake has struck northeast of the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, but there are no immediate reports of damage. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck Saturday afternoon about 48 miles (77 kilometers) north-northeast of St. Kitts. It was also felt in Anguilla and the French Caribbean island of St. Barts.

Remote Alaska quake followed by aftershocks
A moderate earthquake was recorded Friday morning in Alaska above the Arctic Circle, and was followed by an aftershock almost as powerful.

Philippines rocked by 20 earthquakes in two days
Manila: A total of 20 earthquakes, including three powerful ones, rocked different parts of the Philippines from April 17 to 18, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) told Gulf News on Saturday.

PERRY, Oklahoma - The United States Geological Survey reported a 4.0 magnitude earthquake near Perry Saturday morning. The quake shook Noble county residents around 4:43 a.m. Saturday. The USGS said the earthquake was located one mile southeast of Perry, 14 miles northwest of Stillwater. The depth was recorded over two miles deep.

Japan Begins First Military Expansion In More Than 40 Years
Japan began its first military expansion at the western end of its island chain in more than 40 years on Saturday, breaking ground on a radar station on a tropical island off Taiwan. The move risks angering China, locked in a dispute with Japan over nearby islands which they both claim.

Deadly attack on South Sudan base may be considered a 'war crime'
The United Nations Security Council said the attack which killed at least 58 people on a UN base in South Sudan where thousands of civilians were sheltering may 'constitute a war crime'.

Obama signs into law 'terrorist' UN envoy visa ban
President Barack Obama has signed into law a measure that would bar entry to any UN ambassador whom the US says has engaged in "terrorist activity". The law came as a response to Iran's pick of a UN envoy linked to the student militants who overran the US embassy in Tehran in 1979.

Blast kills suspected al-Qaeda militants in Yemen
An air strike killed at least 13 suspected al-Qaeda militants in central Yemen on Saturday, security officials said. The strike in the province of al-Bayda targeted vehicles the insurgents were travelling in at the time. Some reports say three civilians in another car were also killed.

Syria conflict: French journalists freed
Four French journalists held captive in Syria for almost a year have been freed, President Francois Hollande said on Saturday. In a statement, Mr Hollande said he had "learned with great relief this morning of the liberation of the four French journalists"
