Can the government seize your tax refund to pay a relative's debt?
Two months ago, Mary Grice, a career employee at the Food and Drug Administration, was notified the U.S. Treasury had confiscated her state and federal tax refunds totaling $4,500. ...The claim against her came from the Social Security Administration which said it overpaid death benefits to Mary's family after her father Scott Grice died in 1960. Mary was five years old.

Health officials concerned that deadly bird flu could soon pass easily between humans
All it would take is five gene mutations of the H5N1 avian influenza virus to potentially create havoc on a global scale. Dutch researchers are reporting that if those mutations happen, the virus would become transmissible via coughing or sneezing, just like regular flu viruses. Currently, most cases of H5N1 arise after a person has had contact with sick or dead infected poultry.

Ukraine: US warns Russia of 'additional consequences' of further military action
US Secretary of State John Kerry has warned Russia of "additional consequences" if it fails to pull its troops back from the Ukraine border, as Kiev accused Moscow of aggression in its restive east.

4.9-magnitude earthquake rattles central Idaho
A 4.9-magnitude earthquake shook central Idaho, flinging items off walls and scaring residents but otherwise producing no reported damage or injuries in the sparsely populated mountain area. USGS geophysicist Dale Grant says the earthquake was "kind of an unusual occurrence" being the first one of its strength in the area since 2005.

Mike Huckabee Calls Out Obama's 'Christian Convictions' On Gay Marriage
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) went after President Barack Obama's views on gay marriage Friday, questioning the commander-in-chief's changes in his "Christian convictions." In an interview with Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor," guest host Laura Ingraham asked Huckabee if there was a concerted effort out there to tar conservatives as anti-gay. Huckabee said that his views were no different than those of Obama's in 2008, shifting the focus to how the president has changed his stance.

Nigerian senator: '135 civilians killed' in attacks
Gunmen have killed 135 civilians in north east Nigeria since Wednesday, a senior official from the region has told the BBC. Borno state senator Ahmed Zannah said the killings took place in at least three separate attacks in the state. The attackers are suspected to be from the Islamist Boko Haram movement.

Deadly fire destroys homes in Chile's Valparaiso
A large forest fire has killed four people and destroyed more than 500 homes in Chile's port city Valparaiso. Thousands of people are being evacuated from the city to escape the flames, which have been fanned by strong winds coming in from the Pacific. President Michelle Bachelet put the army in charge of the evacuation after declaring the city, 110km (70 miles) west of Santiago, a disaster zone.

Heartbleed bug denial by NSA and White House
The US National Security Agency has denied it knew about or exploited the Heartbleed online security flaw. The denial came after a Bloomberg News report alleging the NSA used the flaw in OpenSSL to harvest data. OpenSSL is online-data scrambling software used to protect data such as passwords sent online.

Rebel forces and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government are blaming each other for the latest reported use of poisonous gas in the ongoing civil war. The opposition contended Saturday that attacks wounded dozens in Hama and Idlib provinces.

Nevada Cattle Rancher Wins 'Range War' With Feds
A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters. Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally. Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.

No US tsunami threat after 7.6 quake in Pacific
U.S. officials say there is no threat of a tsunami to the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii or Alaska after a magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean near the Solomon Islands.

Ukraine crisis: Another police building seized in east
Pro-Russia militants have taken over a police headquarters in the eastern Ukraine city of Kramatorsk, local media and witnesses say. This followed a gun battle with the police defending the building as the attackers stormed it. Several other official buildings were reported to have been seized in Donetsk region on Saturday.

Hezbollah develops new tactics in Syrian civil war
The commandos infiltrated Syrian rebel-held territory near the Lebanese border, watching rebel fighters come and go from a two-story villa before slipping inside to plant a powerful bomb. New quake shakes Nicaragua; nation on alert
A magnitude-6.6 earthquake shook Nicaragua on Friday afternoon, sending people running frightened into the streets less than 24 hours after a magnitude-6.1 quake rattled the Central American country. There were no immediate reports of new casualties or serious damage, but the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was felt in El Salvador and neighboring Costa Rica.

Militias head to Nevada rancher’s standoff with feds: We’re not ‘afraid to shoot’
Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s decades-long battle against the federal government over grazing rights has heated to the point where militia groups have joined in and taken up spots against the feds who’ve circled his land — and talk is, they’re not afraid to open fire. A spokesman for the one of the militia groups said as much to local 8 News Now: I’m not “afraid to shoot,” he said.

Pope Francis asks forgiveness for child abuse by clergy
Pope Francis has asked for forgiveness for the "evil" damage to children caused by sexual abusers in the clergy. He said the abuse was a "moral damage carried out by men of the Church", and that "sanctions" would be imposed.
