According to Snowden, his "mission is accomplished." Snowden's leaking of US spying secrets revealed a global surveillance system of unprecedented proportions, and sparked controversy between the US and foreign leaders that had their privacy breached. He has been termed the greatest threat to the US in its history.
New Japanese island Niijima merged with Nishino-shima
Only a narrow channel of water appeared to separate Japanese islands Nishino-shima and newly created Niijima on satellite images from December 24. The water around the islands was discolored by volcanic minerals and gases, as well as by seafloor sediment stirred up by the ongoing eruption. A faint plume, likely steam and other volcanic gases associated with the eruption, extended away from the new island to the southeast.

n New York, the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to beef up its peacekeeping force in South Sudan. It condemned targeted violence against civilians and ethnic communities and called for "an immediate cessation of hostilities and the immediate opening of a dialogue."
Earthquake rocks on Christamas Day
Campo, CA - An earthquake measuring a preliminary 4.2 magnitude was reported near Campo Wednesday according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Some residents in Potrero called San Diego 6 News reporting that they felt the quake when it struck at 4:18 p.m. There was a report from Alpine on the USGS website.
