Killers

The first recorded terrorist act against Jews in the modern land of Israel occurred in 1851. The grandson of the murdered man was Yoel Moshe Solomon, a founder of Petah Tikva. As current Israeli Economy Minister Naftali Bennett said recently:

“The lesson learned is that the answer to Islamic terror is to continue building.” He also commented on this week’s murder of IDF soldier Tomer Hazan, whose body was dumped in a well in Samaria. Hazan’s co-worker, a Palestinian, strangled him after luring him to a remote area. Bennett thinks clearly, saying that “people who throw soldiers into pits” are no peace partners.

“They destroy, we build,” said Bennett. “They kill, we grow. That was always the State of Israel’s response to terrorism.”

Additionally, another IDF soldier was murdered by a Palestinian sniper, at Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs.

As jihadists slaughtered citizens in Kenya and Pakistan this week, Israel was once again dealing with murderers among their Palestinian neighbors.

Israeli Defense Minister well understands that as his country deals with the potentially existential threat of Iran’s nuclear program, individual deaths are also meaningful.

“In an hour, we will bury a soldier who was murdered by a Palestinian so that his body could be traded and a terrorist could be released from jail,” Ya’alon told Christian lawmakers from around the world at the Israel Allies Foundation’s Jerusalem Chairman’s Conference in the capital.

“This is a tactic that, unfortunately, has been used in the past. 1,500 Israelis were killed after Israel signed a peace accord with the Palestinians. These are the fruits of peace,” he added.

Bennett noted that, as usual, the Palestinian Authority hasn’t condemned the murder.

Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Avigdor Liberman shed some light on the identity of the killer:

“The murderer Nidal Amar is from a well-known Fatah family. A few months ago, Palestinian TV broadcast a program in favor of the murderer’s terrorist brother. The family has photos of Abbas and Arafat hanging in the entrance to its home,” Liberman said.

All this comes at a time when—incredibly, but not surprisingly—Western audiences are actually contemplating whether new Iranian President Rowhani might be a moderate who would be willing to hold serious talks.

How pathetic, given the fact that Rowhani is merely less bellicose than his wacky predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Rowhani recently gave a speech at a convention of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, in which he gave indications that his country’s economy is experiencing severe hardships. While these sanctions are pinching Iran, they will not stop the Islamist government from developing weapons. Only the physical destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities will ensure that Israel remains safe.

The issue is this: jihad is a death cult that must be eradicated before it threatens to take over the world. Sadly, while it’s a given that our current political leadership is incomprehensibly weak, our religious leaders also add to the West’s dangerous attempts at appeasement.

To me, two Jewish deaths are of immeasurable importance. Two soldiers defending the right of their people to settle their ancestral homeland are slaughtered by an implacable enemy. A Christian church in Pakistan is blown to smithereens, and a mall in Nairobi is the scene of hostage-taking and murder.

When will the West wake up? When will the appeasement stop?

The chilling answer is that it might not.

When Rowhani made his remarks about the Revolutionary Guards, he stated that while he appreciated their abilities to protect the homeland, he hoped they would not interfere in the country’s economic plans. Because of the weakened economy, the Guard involves itself in various economic initiatives—those that cannot be sustained by traditional means.

In other words, Rowhani is trying to strike a balanced approach. The problem of course is that until a serious leader within Islam is willing to condemn in total the reality of jihad, he will not affect any real, positive change.

And until political and religious leaders in the West strongly stand against our common enemy, all of us are in danger.
