Of Layers and Lairs
Well, so Syria has become a problem.
After two-and-a-half years of slaughter and civil war, the West has decided that it’s time to get serious about thinking of intervening. This is the new thrust of America foreign policy: as they say, lead from behind.
More than 100,000 Syrians are dead. Bashar Assad is every bit the butcher his father was, and is prepared to hold on to power at all costs. Let us remember, though, that the “rebels” fighting against him for control of the country are themselves jihadists. Assad’s regime is your garden-variety, now-old-school Middle East dictatorship. Assad himself is not particularly passionate about Islam; his challengers are.
Now comes word that Barack Obama is thinking of a military strike on Syria. This is relevant for Israel, of course, but more on that in a minute. There are layers upon layers to this story.
Smart people who know about these things say that an attack on Syria would have wider goals and ramifications, since it would be a direct military challenge to Iran and Hezbollah, who have propped-up Assad for years. Remember, Syria meddled in Lebanon’s internal affairs all through the ‘70s, thus destroying a truly beautiful country. That whole corridor is key to the region, militarily, largely because it opens into northern Israel.

Interesting. How does Obama handle this potential trap? How does he penetrate Assad’s Damascus lair without burning-down the Middle East?
No one has a good answer to that one, since his disastrous (yet curious) policy to date has been to appease the Muslim Brotherhood. Historically, jihadists need only the slightest nod from Washington before launching widespread violence. There was a time when American and Israeli power kept the jihadists at bay; now, they operate openly.
For its part, Israel has no doubt made detailed and far-reaching preparations. For those who worry about Israel’s safety, remember:

Surprise.
Recently, Israel has used pre-emptive strikes against Iranian-produced and delivered missiles in Syria (after an attack on Israel’s northern border); terror cells in the Sinai; and a terrorist cell in Beirut.
Whatever happens, Israel will defend its citizens and survive. Dictators come and jihadists go, but the state of Israel is secure.
That is the only certainty in the Middle East.
