THE SECRETS OF THE BOOK OF OBEDIAH.....

FOR FAIR USE AND EDUCATION AND DISCUSSION PURPOSES

God gives us what we need...not what we want!

We all know that verse in the Bible, Proverbs 16:18:

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

And we all heartily agree!! This pertains to EVERYONE...but me (and you)!! None of us feel that we have "pride" in our hearts. After all, pride isn't really "pride" if we really ARE that nice, cheerful, smart, accommodating, polite, sweet, popular, generous, etc....is it?

We learn in church to "be a cheerful giver"....and we give! And we are proud of ourselves for doing this. We help our neighbor with one small thing that took 5 minutes of our time...and we feel "proud" that we helped someone!

That's why we feel so angry and devastated when anyone complains that we did something wrong....it HURTS OUR PRIDE!!

We all have it, we all nurture it, and we all must learn to deal with it within this lifetime. God tells us all about it in His Book...but most of us aren't interested in learning this. We ALL are more concerned with what is going to happen in the FUTURE (Prophecy)...and it's to the detriment of fighting the war that is within all of us....NOW! TODAY! We are forfeiting our certain "today" for the possibility of an uncertain "tomorrow". Today's business should be taken care of today. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

James 4:13-14...."Go to now; ye that say, 'To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain': (vs.14) Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow; For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."

We may not even have a tomorrow...we don't know until we wake up!

Ray Stedman has a very good article on the Book of Obediah. I don't think that even ONE our of TEN Christians have studied this Book of the Bible. It's the shortest one there is...and we ignore what it says because we feel it won't tell us much about prophecy. I am as guilty of this as anyone....but I'm still learning.

Maybe it's time we all learn to fix what's wrong within OURSELVES, so that we can learn to better deal with others. And I would definitely call this "MEAT" DOCTRINE.

There is yet another form of pride that we read about in Obadiah (verses 12,13):

But you should not have gloated over the day of your brother
in the day of his misfortune;
you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah
in the day of their ruin;
you should not have boasted
in the day of distress.
You should not have entered the gate of my people
in the day of his calamity;
you should not have gloated over his disaster
in the day of his calamity;
you should not have looted his goods
in the day of his calamity. (Obadiah 1:12-13 RSV)

God charges Edom with the sin of gloating as a manifestation of this basic problem of pride. Notice how you hear this so frequently in children who haven't yet learned to cover up what they feel with a subtle varnish of politeness: "Yay, yah, yah, good for you. You had it coming!" Did you ever say that in your own heart about somebody? "You had it coming." You were gloating over them.

Adults learn to disguise this sometimes, but it comes out once in a while. You hear that the boss is sick, and you say. "Nothing trivial, I hope." What do you say when someone fails and you hear about it? Do you ever say, "Well, I told you so. I knew that would happen. I expected it all along"? That is the sense of gloating, you see. I remember reading of the hypochondriac who had written on his tombstone the words, "I told you I was sick."

Now, what causes this? Why do we like to rub salt on another's wounds? What is behind this perverse delight we take in another person's failure or his faults? It is Esau in us. The flesh lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh. In our pride and unconcern we don't care what happens to someone else, as long as everything is all right with us.
