ARE YOU AN "EVANGELICAL" CHRISTIAN?

FOR FAIR USE AND EDUCATION AND DISCUSSION PURPOSES

WHAT IS AN EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN?

I've been hearing this term for many years. When one turns on television to a Christian "televangelist", the term "Evangelical Christian" is spouted everywhere. I have friends (or used to have until I started digging for the truth) who claim to be "Evangelical Christians" proudly, and loudly. And the answer is usually "I go to an Evangelical church and we spread the Gospel." I would love to know where this is done!

I have seen "Christian Halloween" parties for children. I have also seen "Christian benefits", and "Christian fund-raisers", and "Christian concerts", etc. But I have never seen an "Evangelical Christian" function to 'MEET JESUS' (or any of that kind of thing) in all my years of church associations.

So, I found a site which defined (or tried to, anyway) the term "Evangelical":

Now, I should have a new respect for anyone who is an "Evangelical Christian"....but I still don't know what it is.

And I couldn't find that term in the Bible, either....

Arlene, the word evangelist is in the Bible, and it is a description of a Christian who preaches the Gospel. I realize the term Evangelical Christian does get used too much, but it usually is used to differentiate a Christian who believes in salvation by grace through faith as opposed to the Catholics who believe in man made traditions and salvation by works. The Catholic Church would not be an example of an Evangelical church. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info, Kevin. I tried to find a definition of "evangelical Christian" on the internet, but the opinions and theories (can't say "facts" because facts are based on "truth", and nobody seems to know what the truth is) are varied according to whoever is doing the answering.

I've met some great, and kind "evangelicals" in my lifetime; but I've also met some pretty nasty ones....but that goes with people in general. I try not to determine my "likes and dislikes" by any title, race, creed, or gender....just by how the person treats me and others.

In short, evangelicals are a population that is described differently by different people who are
asked (including those "in the know" or even who are supposedly part of the evangelical
community itself), that is simply an unknown to many Americans, that is disrespected and

Yet this population supposedly has enormous spending power, media power, and voting
power. When an article says "The evangelical vote very well may decide the upcoming

If "America" doesn't really know, then I can't assume that either you, or I, know any different.

My educated opinion is that "Christians" are ONE BODY "in Christ" and should NOT be labeling themselves separately from others. Any denominations formed from the main body is an "apostasy". Thereby, if any Christian identifies themselves by any supporting title ADDED TO the name "Christian", then they are an apostate "Christian".

Followers of Jesus Christ, in the beginning, were followers of "The Way". (Jesus Christ is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE...John 14:6) He, Himself, never told his followers to call themselves by ANY NAME.

It was AFTER HIS DEATH that the disciples of following "The Way" were first called "Christians"....see Acts 11:26. And that's where many more troubles started with "Christians" (amongst themselves) calling themselves by distinctive names. THIS SHOULD NOT BE DONE. Now, Christians develop a sense of PRIDE in distinguishing themselves from other Christians. And this is NOT what God intended for us.
