BIBLE VERSES EVIDENCE:

While Yahusha/JESUS was alive, He prayed to His Father: "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.  John 17:15 (KJV)

Yahusha/JESUS gave signs of what must happen before His Return:  "Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:"  Matt. 24:29 (KJV)

Some things are hard to understand.....like the "two witnesses"

FOR FAIR USE AND EDUCATION AND DISCUSSION PURPOSES

Some things in the bible are almost impossible to understand, and I guess they will remain that way until these things actually happen, or that someone is able to come up with an explanation that fits all the pieces.

One of these these things is "the two witnesses" in Revelation chapter 11. I absolutely KNOW they are NOT Elijah and Moses...or Enoch and Moses...or Enoch and Elijah. Two PEOPLE cannot be a true witness about God's truth and salvation to everyone on this earth, reaching everyone, in a 42 month (or 3 1/2 year) amount of time. Besides, those three had NO specific knowledge of the events surrounding the times of the ministry of Jesus Christ, or of the event of the actual death of Jesus Christ. Their testimony would be incomplete. How can they testify (be a witness) to a truth about something they had only hints of? They can't.

So, the explanation MUST come from the hint of who they are by the words "two olive trees and two candlesticks" given for us to search out their meaning. The book, "The Bible Wheel", has some awesome Hebrew aspects of bible interpretation. Here's one of the pieces on Zechariah chapter 4 and the two witnesses of Revelation 11. It's complicated, but it's well worth reading:

A small piece of the article:

OLIVE TREES: The Church is irradiated by the light of the TWO TESTAMENTS, and ever waits upon the commands of the Lord. So also the prophet Zechariah saw one candlestick with seven branches, and these TWO OLIVE-TREES, that is, TESTAMENTS, pouring oil into the candlestick. This is the Church with its oil, which never fails, which makes it shine for the light of the world.

Many hold this interpretation to this day. Here is how Dr. James Burton Coffman put it in his entry on Zechariah 4 This link takes you off the Bible Wheel site and opens a new window in his thirty-seven volume Commentary on the Bible:
The central features of [this vision] are the seven branched golden candlestick and the two olive trees, one on each side of it. Fortunately, we do not need to rely upon the subjective guesses of liberal commentators for the interpretation of this vision, which in the light of related passages of the Bible appears simple and easily understood. The golden candlestick from the very first appearance of it in the ancient tabernacle TYPIFIED THE WORD OF GOD by virtue of its being the only light in the sanctuary representing both Israels of God. Zechariah's vision adds a significant detail to the metaphorical candlestick of the tabernacle, namely, the two olive trees; but that merely changed the symbolism to show the source of THE WORD OF GOD, i.e., the OLIVE TREES, which undoubtedly stand for THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS.

I have found that nothing worthwhile in this lifetime comes easily, and it's no different when trying to make sense out of difficult bible passages. Is this the correct interpretation? I think so, but that does not mean I am right. But it's nice to bounce ideas around, and NOT just criticisms. Anyone have any other ideas (other than Elijah and Moses...etc.)?

Re: Some things are hard to understand.....like the "two witnesses"

Arlene, understanding the two witnesses isn't really that hard to understand. Yes, they are two men that will preach the gospel in Jerusalem for 1260 days. Let's look at the passage in Revelation 11 that describes their ministry:

3 And I will give [power] unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
8 And their dead bodies [shall lie] in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

It's easy to see that these are really men of God sent to Jerusalem for this special ministry to Israel during the 70th week of Daniel. God didn't mean for this passage of scripture to be impossible to understand. I have believed for a long time that the two witnesses will be Enoch and Elijah, but it could always be two men who are living during this timeframe.
