North Korea warn South over UN sanctions
North Korea has issued another warning, a day after announcing plans for a third nuclear test. Mali crisis: US admits mistakes in training local troops

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has lifted the military's ban on women serving in combat roles, potentially opening hundreds of thousands of frontline positions to women. Syrian rebels detonate car bomb near Israeli border

Let elderly people 'hurry up and die', says Japanese minister
Japan's new government is barely a month old, and already one of its most senior members has insulted tens of millions of voters by suggesting that the elderly are an unnecessary drain on the country's finances. Taro Aso, the finance minister, said on Monday that the elderly should be allowed to "hurry up and die" to relieve pressure on the state to pay for their medical care.
Antibiotic-resistant diseases pose 'apocalyptic' threat, top expert says

Reventador volcano (Ecuador) enters new eruption with lava flows and explosions
The volcano has now entered a full-scale eruption. Lava flows descending on the flanks and glow at the summit were observed. A tall steam and ash plume rises 1.5 km above the volcano and drifts west. Additionally explosions have been reported which were heard in the sector of Reventador. Seismic activity is strong and characterized by strong tremor and explosion signals.
