Near Shilo: Arabs Injure 11 Jews, Damage Vineyards
About 250 Arabs rioted Saturday afternoon near Esh Kodesh, close to Shilo in the Binyamin region, injuring 11 Jews. According to the Tatzpit news agency, the rioters tore down the fences surrounding the Jewish residents' vineyards, causing them serious damage.-Israeli security forces instructed the local emergency team to go into action, and the responders fired in the air until the IDF arrived in the scene.

Venezuela faces turmoil as Chavez worsens

Tens of thousands of Sunni Muslims in Iraq have been staging anti-government protests in Baghdad and other cities. It is is the latest in two weeks of protests over alleged discrimination. They are also calling for the release of female detainees they say have been arrested in place of husbands or sons wanted on charges of terrorism.

Hundreds of thousands of supporters of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction have held rallies in Gaza to mark the group's 48th anniversary. Last month, supporters of Hamas celebrated their movement's founding with a rare rally in the West Bank.

Wildfires on the Australian island of Tasmania have stranded thousands of people and destroyed at least 100 homes. Much of Australia is experiencing a heatwave, and temperatures in the Tasmanian state capital Hobart earlier reached a record high of 41C. Some took shelter on beaches on the Tasman Peninsula, which remains cut off.

The US Congress has passed an emergency aid package for victims of "superstorm" Sandy, days after an outcry over a delay in approval. The $9.7bn (£5.9bn) bill will prevent a flood insurance fund from running out of money by next week. House Speaker John Boehner agreed to hold two votes on a total $60bn request, after politicians from the hardest-hit areas spoke out.

'Obama set to nominate Hagel for defense post'
President Barack Obama appeared poised on Friday to pick former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as the next US defense secretary and the announcement may come early next week. Sources on Capitol Hill and in the national security community said all signs were pointing to Hagel as Obama's choice to replace current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
