New Poll Shows Hamas Will Win Presidential Elections
Hamas won the last round of legislative elections and its PM represents the legal gov't of the Palestinian Authority, not Fayyad, who was appointed by Abbas’ Western backers. Abbas’ rule has been based on an illegal emergency decree that has gone on for six years now. But at some point the PA will need to hold elections. It has held very few of them so far because Fatah is afraid of Hamas. But if Palestinian statehood is approved and legal elections are held, then the Islamists will beat the Arab Socialists just like they did in Egypt. And what then?

Assad's forces seize Homs district from rebels - activists
Syrian government forces have pushed rebels from a district in Homs after several days of fierce fighting in the strategically important city, opposition activists said on Saturday. The army moved into Deir Ba'alba, a neighbourhood on the north-eastern edge of Homs, they said, leaving the rebels controlling just the central neighbourhoods around the old city and the district of Khalidiyah, immediately to the north.

Activists voice dismay as Senate renews government surveillance measure
Civil rights campaigners voiced dismay...over the US Senate's re-authorization of the government's warrantless surveillance program, and the defeat of...amendments that would have provided for basic oversight of the eavesdropping. The Senate voted 73-23 to extend the law, called the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act, for five years.

Egypt to pursue relationship with Hezbollah
In a dramatic policy shift, Egypt will seek to forge "tight" relations with Hezbollah, Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon Ashraf Hamdy revealed in a candid interview published Saturday in Lebanon's Daily Star. “You cannot discuss politics in Lebanon without having a relationship with Hezbollah," Hamdy was quoting as saying, before describing the terror group as a "real force on the ground" with "big political and military influence."

$1 Trillion Obamacare Tax Hike Hitting on Jan. 1
On January 1, regardless of the outcome of fiscal cliff negotiations, Americans will be hit with a $1 trillion Obamacare tax hike. Obamacare contains twenty new or higher taxes. Five of the taxes hit for the first time on January 1. In total, for the years 2013-2022, Americans face a net $1 trillion tax hike for the years 2013-2022, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

French 75% income tax struck down by constitutional council
France's constitutional council has overturned a top income tax rate of 75% introduced by Socialist President Francois Hollande. Raising taxes for those earning more than 1m euros (£817,400) has been a flagship policy for Mr Hollande, who was elected in May.

Taliban Pakistani Taliban call for ceasefire in video statement
The Taliban in Pakistan have said they want to negotiate a ceasefire in a video statement by their leader, Hakemullah Mehsud. The video, delivered to the Reuters news agency in Pakistan on Friday, is the latest in a series of statements in recent days stating that the group wants a peace deal – though they refuse to disarm.

Doctors have announced that a young Indian woman who was gang-raped and severely beaten on a bus in India's capital, New Delhi, has died at their Singapore hospital. A statement by Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital where the 23-year-old victim was being treated said she "died peacefully" early on Saturday.

Governor signs new law for abortion clinics in Michigan
Michigan's Republican governor on Friday signed into law new rules for abortion providers that supporters say will protect the health of pregnant women but critics say will shutter clinics and restrict access. The law signed by Governor Rick Snyder increases state oversight of abortion clinics and establishes a screening protocol to make sure women are not being forced to get an abortion.

U.S. Drought: Third Highest Severe to Extreme Percentage on Record
Extreme and exceptional drought, the worst categories on the U.S. Drought Monitor, are on the rise again. China approves tighter rules on internet access
China has tightened its rules on internet usage to enforce a previous requirement that users fully identify themselves to service providers. The move is part of a package of measures which state-run Xinhua news agency said would protect personal information. But critics believe the government is trying to limit freedom of speech.

US evacuates Central African Republic embassy
The US says it has evacuated its embassy in the Central African Republic as rebels threaten to advance towards the capital, Bangui. The state department said it had not broken off diplomatic ties with the government but warned US citizens not to travel to CAR during the unrest. Earlier, CAR President Francois Bozize appealed to the US and France to help block the rebel advance.

Flood-hit areas face further rain
Flood-hit areas have been warned they face renewed problems from storms, as further rain is forecast across the UK. There are 77 flood warnings and 177 flood alerts in England and Wales, and six alerts and one warning in Scotland. The main rail line in the South West of England, which was closed between Exeter St Davids and Tiverton due to flooding, is expected to reopen later.

Winter snow storm hits New England as '16 die' in US
Sixteen people have been reported killed by a severe snow storm moving through the north-eastern US after disrupting Christmas in the Midwest. States in New England are seeing heavy snowfall, with over a foot (30cm) already fallen in parts of Massachusetts, weather officials said. Flights were grounded and road collisions reported as the storm moved across the middle of the US.

Putin signs anti-US adoptions bill
President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed a bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children, part of a harsh response to a U.S. law targeting Russians deemed to be human rights violators. Although some top Russian officials including the foreign minister openly opposed the bill and Putin himself had been noncommittal about it last week, he signed it less than 24 hours after receiving it from Parliament, where both houses passed it overwhelmingly.

Russia urges Syrian gov't to pursue dialogue with opponents
Russia urged the Syrian government on Friday to act on its stated readiness for dialogue with its opponents, throwing its weight behind a diplomatic push to end a 21-month-old conflict in Syria. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he had urged Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad to emphasize his government's openness to dialogue with the opposition during talks in Moscow on Thursday.
