Follow Me
I rarely use “Israel Watch” to ask for personal favors, but when you hear what I’m asking, you’ll realize it’s as much for you as for me.
In the spring, my friend Benzion Netanyahu passed away. The patriarch of this great Israeli family—sons Jonathan, Benjamin, and Iddo—was a world-class historian. For those of you who enjoy historical works and some deep reading, his Don Isaac Abravanel is mind-blowing. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
And of course, there is Entebbe: The Jonathan Netanyahu Story, about the famous hostage rescue in which “Yoni” was the only Israeli commando killed, in 1976. I often tell people it is the best book I’ve ever read, and I don’t say such things lightly.
Now comes a crowning achievement. A new film, “Follow Me,” has been produced that chronicles the life of Yoni Netanyahu, with special emphasis on the Entebbe mission. I’ve already watched it three times, and it is quite riveting.
One of the most professionally produced documentaries I’ve ever seen, “Follow Me” features interviews with the Netanyahu family, including Iddo and his wife, Daphne. The interviews with Benjamin are quite moving. It also features extensive interviews with members of Sareyet Matkal, the elite Israeli counter-terrorism unit that went to Entebbe with their commander, Yoni.
The way the producers weave the story of Yoni with the raid itself is riveting. One gets a sense of the human side of elite Israeli soldiers, while at the same time learning just what it’s like to live among implacable enemies. The whole thing is a tour-de-force, a triumph of storytelling.
You have my personal guarantee that you will be on the edge of your seat as you listen to these aging men recount that night in far-away Africa. Their words, the production values, and the story arc will leave you speechless.
I know this because in July, I attended a premier of “Follow Me” at the annual summit for Christian United for Israel (CUFI) in Washington. About 800 people jammed into a ballroom to view the film and I was astonished afterwards by the outflow of emotion from the audience members, several of whom went to the microphones during a Q&A with the production team. One woman stammered and dabbed her eyes before almost whispering, “This has changed my life…”
