Thousands flee homes as strong typhoon blows into southern Philippines
Thousands of villagers fled from their homes Monday as a strong typhoon roared closer to the southern Philippines, prompting authorities to suspend sea travel in high-risk areas and halt gold-mining in a mountain town notorious for deadly landslides.-"This typhoon is not a joke," (President Benigno Aquino III) said after meeting top officials in charge of disaster-response. "It could be the strongest to hit the country this year," he said.

Obama Prepares to Jump the Cliff
the president does seem willing to allow the across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts to kick in at the end of the year if House Republicans refuse to allow tax rates to go up for top earners. Obama is treating the negotiations over tax rates and spending as a continuation of the debt-ceiling fight that created the automatic spending cuts in the first place.

Three earthquakes jolt eastern Taiwan
Taipei, Dec. 3 (CNA) Three earthquakes shook Hualien in eastern Taiwan early Monday, with the strongest recorded at magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Heavy seismicity
Alaska as also experienced its share of earthquakes over the weekend and they don’t appear to be slowing down any. Indonesia was hit with a mild 4.6 magnitude seismic, South America had a 4.5 quake, a 4.4 hit Afghanistan and Alaska took a hit nine hours ago with a 4.1 earthquake. Earthquakes also hit the Alaska region earlier on Saturday with Alaskan’s reporting that this quake seemed to last for several minutes and was one of the strongest quakes they have encountered The earth moved Saturday in the Jujuy Province of Argentina, the US Geological Survey announced in an emailed alert.

4.6-magnitude quake jolts eastern Romania
There are no reports of casualties, injuries or major material damage for now. The quake struck at 10:52 p.m. local time (GMT 2052) at a depth of 67 km, near Reghiu of Vrancea County, some 210 kilometers northeast of Romania's capital Bucharest.

Quake tremors in Vanuatu Islands
An earthquake at a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale sent tremors to Vanuatu Islands, located between Australia and Fiji, at 8.54am today.

Massive volcanic eruption in the cards for Japan
Japan should brace for a catastrophic volcanic eruption at some point, say experts, citing a massive buildup of magma at many of the nation's 110 active volcanoes. The researchers said seismic activity surged at 20 active volcanoes around Japan, including Mount Fuji, after the magnitude-9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake struck last year. Storm over German plan to supply Saudi Arabia with armoured vehicles
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government is reported to be considering a request from Saudi Arabia for the supply of several hundred German-made "Boxer" armoured patrol vehicles which are purpose built to help the military combat rebel forces and could be used to crush popular dissent.

Egypt judges refuse to oversee Morsi referendum
Judges in Egypt have refused to oversee a vote on the country's new draft constitution, to be held in two weeks. The Judges' Club's decision follows a confrontation between Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court and Islamist supporters of President Mohammed Morsi. The court said it was suspending its work after its members were prevented from ruling on the legitimacy of the body that drew up the constitution.

Borno attacks: Nigeria 'militants' kill Christians
Suspected Islamist fighters have killed 10 Christians in an overnight machete and gun attack in Borno state in north-east Nigeria. Later, gunmen attacked government targets and churches near the border with Cameroon, killing five policemen. It is not yet clear who was behind the attacks.

The joint chiefs of staff of Iran’s armed forces have established a new ‘soft war’ headquarters to counter threats from Israel and the US, particularly in cyberspace...Brig.-Gen. A US coastguard has died after his boat was rammed by a suspected smuggler's vessel off California, Coast Guard officials have said. The suspected smuggler boat is said to have been run at high speed directly into the government vessel, throwing both crew members into the water.

North Korea 'installs long-range rocket at launch site'
North Korea has begun installing a rocket at its Sohae launch pad ahead of a planned launch this month, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports. The North's state news media say the launch is an attempt to put an observation satellite into space, between 10 and 22 December.

The third powerful storm in a week drenched an already saturated Northern California, but concerns of serious flooding eased as the system moved through faster than expected.
