Powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquakes strikes Guatemala killing at least 48

November 8, 2012 – GUATEMALA – A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Guatemala on Wednesday, killing at least 48 people, injuring about 150 and leaving 23 unaccounted for, government officials said. They warned that the official toll was preliminary and could rise. “This is the largest earthquake we have had since the one in 1976,” President Otto Pérez Molina said at a news conference, recalling the temblor that killed about 23,000 people. The earthquake on Wednesday, centered off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, struck at 10:35 a.m., leveling houses and damaging government buildings, schools and roads. “It was too strong,” said Yesenia Miranda, 30, a pastor at a church in the department of San Marcos, the area hardest hit. “We’ve never lived through anything like this.” During the earthquake, the church’s walls cracked and its windows broke, said Ms. Miranda, who is helping operate a relief center out of the rooms that were not damaged. The city’s hospital, she said, had extensive damage and was operating at less than capacity. After a wall at a local prison fell, breaching security, 98 inmates were taken to a jail in nearby Quetzaltenango. Although no major damage was reported outside of Guatemala, shaking could be felt in buildings as far as San Salvador and Mexico City. Mr. Pérez Molina placed San Marcos, adjacent to the border with Mexico, under the highest disaster alert level and traveled there to assess the damage. Saying that aftershocks were likely, he asked people to evacuate buildings, especially those made of adobe. Shortly after the earthquake was felt, Twitter users began posting photographs of homes with deeply cracked walls, surrounded by small mounds of debris and buried cars. In some pictures, roads leading to San Marcos appeared to be entirely blocked by landslides. In a dizzying video, lamps were swinging and a panicked dog could be heard in the background. –NY Times

6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes near Vancouver Island

November 8, 2012 – VANCOUVER - A 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred off Vancouver Island Wednesday night. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake occurred about 182 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy, B.C. around 9 p.m. ET. There were no immediate reports of any damage. No tsunami warnings have been issued. A number of tsunami warnings were issued when a 7.7-magnitude quake struck off B.C.’s coast on Oct. 27, but all were later downgraded. At that time, the coastal area from the north tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Decision, Alaska was in potential danger. The quake was felt across north-central B.C. and some low-lying communities were evacuated as a precaution. –CTV

California-Oregon Earthquake: 4.2 Quake Strikes Off The Coast

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck early Wednesday roughly 140 miles west of Gold Beach, Ore., just north of the California border. Geologists find East Coast earthquakes travel farther

November 8, 2012 – RICHMOND, Va. — Data from the 2011 earthquake centered in Virginia shows East Coast tremors can travel much farther and cause damage over larger areas than previously thought, the U.S. Geological Survey said Tuesday. The agency estimated about one-third of the U.S. population could have felt the magnitude 5.8 tremor centered about 50 miles northwest of Richmond, which would mean more people were affected than any earthquake in U.S. history. Scientists also found the quake that caused more than $200 million in damage triggered landslides at distances four times farther and over an area 20 times larger than research from previous quakes has shown. “Scientists are confirming with empirical data what more than 50 million people in the eastern U.S. experienced firsthand: this was one powerful earthquake,” USGS Director Marcia McNutt said in a news release about the findings presented at the Geological Society of America conference in Charlotte, N.C. Researchers used landslides to see how far-reaching the shaking from East coast earthquakes could be. The unexpected jolt cracked the Washington Monument in spots and toppled delicate masonry high atop the National Cathedral. The shaking was felt from Georgia to New England. According to the findings, the farthest landslide from the quake was 150 miles from the epicenter, a greater distance than any other similar-sized earthquake. Previous similar quakes have resulted in landslides no farther than 36 miles from the epicenter. Additionally, the landslides from the 2011 tremor occurred in an area of about 12,895 square-miles — about the size of the state of Maryland. Previous studies indicated an area of about 580 square-miles — about the size of Houston — from an earthquake of similar magnitude. “It’s just much more dangerous to have an earthquake at that level back on the East Coast than it would be on the West Coast,” said Edwin Harp, a USGS scientist and co-author of the study. “If something big happened, although it’s much less frequent, it would tend to damage a lot more buildings because they’re probably not quite up to the codes that they are in California.” Geologic structure and rock properties on the East Coast allow seismic waves to travel farther without weakening compared with the West Coast, Harp said. He said equations used to predict ground shaking might need to be revised now that scientists know more about the power of East Coast earthquakes. The information also will help with building codes as well as emergency preparedness, the USGS said. While West Coast earthquake veterans scoffed at what they viewed as only a moderate temblor, the August 2011 quake changed the way officials along the East Coast viewed emergency preparedness. Emergency response plans that once focused on hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding and snow are being revised to include quakes. -WSJ

Earthquake fears prompt more warnings against closing Kits Coast Guard base

November 8, 2012 – VANCOUVER – After last week’s strong earthquake in the Haida Gwaii a former Commander of the Kitsilano Coast Guard base is, again, warning the federal government against shutting the facility down. Fred Moxey says Kits base would be one of the only structures in the area to survive if the “big one” ever strikes Vancouver. “Kitsilano was rebuilt in 1991 after a fire destroyed it. The station has been built to withstand the highest earthquake that we would expect here on the West coast and the pilings are right down in the solid bedrock.” Moxey says the Richmond Sea Island base where Coast Guard assets would be consolidated is not built to withstand an earthquake and sits in an area with a number of concerns, including liquefaction, in the aftermath of a big quake. He says Coast Guard hovercrafts and other craft would end up out of action if they were in dock at Sea Island base when a quake struck unlike Kits base. “They would be available to communicate to the rescue centre in Victoria and also through to the city of Vancouver as to the navigable water ways, bridges would probably be compromised, and they would also be doing search and rescue, they would be perhaps fire-fighting.” Moxey says replacement assets like an inshore rescue boat and volunteer Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue staff would be unable to fight fires and would likely have a hard time even getting crews to various bases after a serious earthquake. He says Kits base isn’t just manned around the clock but staff are highly trained for situations like emergency response. “We have trained in the past where we have set up a portable hospital in tents in Vanier Park with physicians and nurses and EHS also the parking lot there we have in the past and trained for securing that area so that we can use it as a helicopter pad for bringing or taking away injured citizens.” When contacted the Coast Guard said there were some buildings at Sea Island base that are also built up to code. They also said there is no guarantees any building will survive an earthquake. A University of British Columbia expert on Earthquakes, liquefaction, and the Fraser river delta admits Richmond may not be ideal when it comes to surviving an earthquake intact. Professor Peter Byrne says the liquefaction danger comes from the ground Richmond is built on. “The crust of clay material about three metres thick thats fairly stiff and won’t liquefy. Underneath that you have loose sand to a depth of ten metres or more that will liquefy in the event of a large earthquake and so the concern then is this material from about three meters to ten meters that it would liquefy.” Byrne says if an earthquake strikes directly under the city then all bets are off. He compares it to the 1995 Kobe, Japan earthquake that killed over 5000 people noting the Fraser river delta shares similar characteristics. “Flooding would be a concern and cracking of the ***** would be a concern.” He says the ground underneath Kobe liquefied and caused massive problems. “And that caused all their water, sewer, power lines to break and so they had to evacuate 30-thousand people out of there just because they had no water, no sewer, no power, that is very much like the condition for the Fraser Delta.” But if the “big one” ever strikes in Richmond he doesn’t anticipate the death toll to be similar to Kobe, but the aftermath of the quake will bring mammoth challenges to Richmond. “I don’t think it would kill that many people basically BC Hydro can’t provide the power and bascially you can’t provide the water there so you would have to evacuate the Fraser delta probably have to get 300-thousand people out of there because they wouldn’t have the supplies they need so it would be the greatest evacuation since Dunkirk.” In 1940 during World War II Allied forces evacuated over 300,000 soldiers from the French port in about a week ahead of an invading German army. When asked where the safest place to be in Vancouver during an Earthquake for people or emergency responders Byrne said the peninsula of Vancouver towards UBC. -CKNW

Strong 5.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off east coast of Brazil

January 21, 2013 – BRAZIL – A rather shallow 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the ocean floor just off the coast of Brazil, south of the popular tourist destination of Natal. The eastern coast of Brazil is relatively free from faults and is not located on the border of any major tectonic plates. So this earthquake is quite unusual. If we look at the seismic hazard map of Brazil (below), it’s clear to see that most of Brazil’s seismic hazards lie in the western part of the country.
In 2010, Brazilian seismologist João Carlos Dourado, from Universidade Estadual Paulista, explained in an interview to G1 that Brazil is located at the center of the South American tectonic plate and therefore away from the stresses on the plate edges, which cause earthquakes of the magnitude that plague Chile and countries on the western coast of South America. Today’s earthquake struck at a depth of 15.1 km (9.4 miles) under the Atlantic Ocean floor. The epicenter of the earthquake was 93 km (57 miles) E of Itamaraca, Brazil. 1
Unusual: Is this quake from a previously unknown fault this close to the shoreline or might other factors be at work here…like the area of growing weakness of the planet’s magnetic field in the South Atlantic Anomaly? Natal is virtually near the epicenter of the SAA. The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is an area where the Earth’s inner Van Allen radiation belt comes closest to the Earth’s surface dipping down to an altitude of 200km (124mi). This leads to an increased flux of energetic particles in this region and exposes orbiting satellites to higher than usual levels of radiation. The effect is caused by the non-concentricity of the Earth and its magnetic dipole, and the SAA is the near-Earth region where the Earth’s magnetic field is weakest. -The Extinction Protocol
