Quake of 7.9 magnitude strikes off Philippines: USGS
An earthquake of 7.9 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday and a tsunami warning has been issued for the region, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The quake was centered off the east coast, 91 miles off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles, USGS said.

Food prices jump will hit poor, World Bank warns
Global food prices have leapt by 10% in the month of July, raising fears of soaring prices for the planet's poorest, the World Bank has warned. The bank said that a US heatwave and drought in parts of Eastern Europe were partly to blame for the rising costs. The price of key grains such as corn, wheat and soybean saw the most dramatic increases, described by the World Bank president as "historic".

Hurricane Isaac 'drove Mississippi River backwards'
The storm surge ahead of Hurricane Isaac made the Mississippi River run backwards for 24 hours. US Geological Survey (USGS) instruments at Belle Chasse in Louisiana recorded the flow of the river, finding it running in reverse on Tuesday. The flow reached nearly 5,200 cubic metres per second (182,000 cubic feet per second) upriver, with a height of nearly 3m (10ft) above average.

EU commission gears up for banking union legislation
Legislation to establish a banking union for the eurozone will be tabled on 12 September, European Commission President Jose Barroso said in a speech Thursday (30 August). ...However, with Britain and other non-eurozone countries likely to opt-out of the system, the union is expected to focus on the single currency areas.

'PM tells US 'time has run out' on Iran diplomacy'
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu got into a diplomatic shouting match with US Ambassador Dan Shapiro over US President Barack Obama's handling of Iran's nuclear program, saying "time has run out" for diplomacy, Yediot Aharonot cited a source as saying on Friday. ...A source that participated in the meeting said that a particularly angry and stressed Netanyahu began a tirade against the US president, attacking him for not doing enough on Iran.

'Israel must alter strategy to stop Gaza terror'
Home Front Defense Minister Avi Dichter on Friday said that Israel will have to alter its deterrence strategy vis-a-vis Gaza-based terrorism. Dichter's comments came during a visit to the house in Sderot hit by a rocket fired from Gaza earlier in the day.

Earthquakes raise alert level at Alaska volcano
Seismic equipment located near the volcano began detecting a "swarm of high-frequency earthquakes" at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, the AVO reports. The earthquakes continued through the night into Thursday, prompting the alert level at the volcano being raised. The alert level is currently at yellow, which means that the "volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level." Additionally, aircraft traveling in the area are advised to exercise caution.

China’s fears grow over eurozone crisis
Premier Wen Jiabao told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that Europe must "strike a balance" between fiscal tightening and measures to promote growth. "Europe's debt crisis has continued to worsen, giving rise to serious concerns in the international community. Frankly, I am also worried," he said. His comments mark a shift in Chinese policy. Beijing has until now backed austerity across Euroland, but the severity of China's own downturn has begun to rattle policymakers.

Aug. 30 quake shakes Arctic Norwegian island

The Imperial County Board of Supervisors declared the emergency after getting more information about damage. According to the Imperial Valley Press, 19 mobile homes have been red-tagged, several buildings -- including a school auditorium -- have been closed because of damage and water pipes broke. There has been no total damage estimate.

World food prices rose 10% in July, pushed by Midwest drought
