8.6 earthquake possible in Southern California? Caltech study suggests new ‘mega-earthquake’ risk


July 26, 2012 – LOS ANGELES - In recent years, scientists, first responders and utilities have been preparing for “The Big One,” that inevitable quake that will rock Southern California to its core. It’s coming. For sure. They just don’t know when. But the U.S. Geological Survey and Caltech have been on the ball, working from a likely scenario, a simulated “Shakeout” that would have a 7.8 quake hitting greater L.A. It would be deadly, destructive and put us in the dark for days, if not weeks. Unfortunately, a 7.8 might now be too low of an estimate for The Big One: Caltech researchers looked at Sumatra’s (April 11) 8.6 earthquake and concluded — maybe — that a similar temblor could happen along the same San Andreas fault that will produce our Big One. Make that a possible Bigger One. Scientists said the Indonesian rocker was larger than they ever thought such a quake “could be,” according to Caltech. It was a ‘intraplate strike-slip quake,” similar to what would happen at San Andreas, where much of California, from Baja to San Francisco, is moving north as the rest of America moves south. In Sumatra, scientists found that this was not only the biggest strike-slip fault temblor ever, but that it set of a series of right-angle ruptures that amplified the shaking, like a block of ice cracking up in the heat. And yes, it could happen here. The research, published last week in the journal Science Express, argues: The new details provide fresh insights into the possibility of ruptures involving multiple faults occurring elsewhere–something that could be important for earthquake-hazard assessment along California’s San Andreas fault, which itself is made up of many different segments and is intersected by a number of other faults at right angles. Lingsen Meng, lead author of the Caltech research: If other earthquake ruptures are able to go this deep or to connect as many fault segments as this earthquake did, they might also be very large and cause significant damage. The USGS, of course, is begging Southern Californians to prepare for our “mega-earthquake,” as academics called the Indonesian shaker. 41 gas emissions and low rumbling tremors: Popocatépetl simmers, bidding her time



July 26, 2012 – MEXICO – The Popocatepetl volcano registered 41 exhalations of steam, gas and ash, in the last 24 hours, according to the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred). In his report by 11:00 hrs on the volcanic activity, the body of the Interior Ministry said the colossus also generated isolated segments of low amplitude tremors. On the latter, it is not detailed the cumulative time in this specific activity, although it was reported that the 41 emissions were of low to medium range. “It is possible that some of them were accompanied by some ash” because of the cloud around the crater that prevented good visibility. In the course of the morning was observed at times a thin pen and persistent water vapor and gas, where persistent cloud cover was removed intermittently. Strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake strikes near island of Mauritius



July 26, 2012 – INDIAN OCEAN – A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey said. The quake was centered 212 miles northeast of Rodrigues island and at a depth of 20.5 miles. The USGS initially put the magnitude at 6.7, adjusted it and then restored the magnitude. The earthquake’s epicenter was 9.8 km (6.1 miles) in depth. –Reuters

More empty promises to fix European debt problems, prop up ailing financial markets

July 26, 2012 – LONDON – British Prime Minister David Cameron Thursday underlined his government’s commitment to fixing the U.K.’s public finances, as he appealed to businesses across the world to invest in the U.K. at a conference timed to coincide with London’s hosting of the 2012 Olympic Games. Mr. Cameron said his administration will continue its efforts to rein in a large budget deficit even though official data showed Wednesday that the country’s economy contracted by 0.7% in the second quarter of the year. British Prime Minister David Cameron speaking earlier this month, “Getting our debt under control is absolutely essential for growth,” Mr. Cameron said. In the ornate rooms of Lancaster House, which stands in the shadow of Buckingham Palace, Mr. Cameron attempted to entice the 200 global business leaders, policy makers and investors attending the conference to invest in the U.K. With the eyes of the world currently on the Olympics host city, Mr. Cameron took the opportunity to burnish his government’s pro-business credentials as he looks to build an economic legacy from the sporting extravaganza. He highlighted moves to reduce red tape, cut tax rates for businesses and provide incentives to carry out research in the U.K. The prime minister also drew attention to a scheme, first announced in the March budget, aimed at encouraging the creation of new businesses by offering investors tax breaks on profits from asset sales if they plow the money back into start-ups. “We’re making our economy more competitive,’ Mr. Cameron said. Wednesday’s dire gross domestic product figure, which was much weaker than expected, has intensified the debate within the U.K. about spending cuts versus stimulus as some commentators claim that austerity is proving a major drag on growth. –WSJ

That would give it the ability to borrow money from the ECB. Such a move would be of particular significant for Spain and Italy as the current bailoutfund does not have enough money to rescue them both. Draghi’s comments helped offset mostly gloomy news from corporate earnings. Major companies like engineering group Siemens and carmaker Volkswagen warned that the economic slowdown in Europe would hurt profits in coming quarters. It’s back: Another potential derecho storm could hit U.S. Northeast

July 26, 2012 – WEATHER – A derecho, the kind of storm that knocked out power to millions in Washington last month, may accompany bad weather forecast for New York City and the rest of the Northeast tomorrow, the U.S. Storm Prediction Center said. There’s a moderate chance the rare windstorm will develop in an area from Indiana to Massachusetts, the center said on its website. The region is also at risk for severe thunderstorms, hail and possible tornadoes after noon, according to John Hart, a meteorologist at the agency’s Norman, Oklahoma, offices. “The environment is going to be favorable for considerably severe weather right across the area even if we don’t get a derecho,” Hart said by telephone. Last month, a derecho knocked out power to at least 4.3 million people from New Jersey to North Carolina as it unleashed winds of as much as 91 miles (146 kilometers) per hour, as powerful as a Category 1 hurricane. Twenty-four deaths were linked to the storm and its aftermath, according to the Associated Press. A derecho is defined as an event that has wind gusts of at least 58 mph and leaves a swath of damage for 240 miles, according to the storm center’s website. A storm that swept from Chicago to Kentucky yesterday also seems to have met the definition of a derecho, Hart said. Yesterday’s storm wasn’t as intense as the one that struck the mid-Atlantic, including Washington, on June 29, he said. Hart said derechos are hard to predict because they require that a number of atmospheric elements come together. “There is no way to have high confidence in such a forecast,” Hart said. “We decided the risk of that scenario happening was high enough that we would highlight it.” The area from western Ohio to southern New England will probably be in the path of severe storms tomorrow afternoon, Hart said. New York, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati all have a 45 percent chance of severe thunderstorms, high winds and hail. –Bloomberg

Japan’s Sakurajima volcano marks 600th eruption this year with massive explosion

July 25, 2012 – JAPAN - The Sakurajima volcano in southern Japan has erupted, spewing volcanic ash onto Kagoshima City. The eruption at one of Japan’s most active volcanoes showered ash on the streets of Kagoshima, which lies just 2km across a bay from the volcano. Residents of Kagoshima donned face masks to protect themselves while sweeping away the ash. The volcano has erupted more than 600 times this year and is expected to continue its intermittent eruptions. Currently, the volcano warning there is at level three out of a possible five levels. A level five would mean that the residents living near the crater would have to be evacuated, while level three warns people not to approach the volcano. –Herald Sun

Satellites imagery sees unprecedented Greenland Ice Sheet melt

July 25, 2012 – CLIMATE - For several days this month, Greenland’s surface ice cover melted over a larger area than at any time in more than 30 years of satellite observations. Nearly the entire ice cover of Greenland, from its thin, low-lying coastal edges to its 2-mile-thick (3.2-kilometer) center, experienced some degree of melting at its surface, according to measurements from three independent satellites analyzed by NASA and university scientists. On average in the summer, about half of the surface of Greenland’s ice sheet naturally melts. At high elevations, most of that melt water quickly refreezes in place. Near the coast, some of the melt water is retained by the ice sheet, and the rest is lost to the ocean. But this year the extent of ice melting at or near the surface jumped dramatically. According to satellite data, an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface thawed at some point in mid-July. Researchers have not yet determined whether this extensive melt event will affect the overall volume of ice loss this summer and contribute to sea level rise. –Space Daily
