US drone strike kills 8 militants, Pakistani officials say
Pakistani intelligence officials say a U.S. drone strike has killed eight suspected militants in the North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border. They say missiles fired from an unmanned drone struck a house in Dre Nishter village early Sunday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Mississippi to become only state without abortion clinic?
Mississippi soon could become the only U.S. state without an abortion clinic as a new law takes effect this weekend. Critics say it would force women in one of the country's poorest states to drive hours to obtain a constitutionally protected procedure or carry unwanted pregnancies to term.

Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, vows to support Palestinians
Egypt's newly elected president has sent an implicit message of reassurance to Israel in his first major address after taking office, but he also pledged support for the "legitimate rights" of the Palestinians. Islamist Mohammed Morsi said Saturday that his administration will continue to honor its international treaties - a thinly veiled reference to the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.

Report: Al-Qaida planning to crash U.S. airline during London Olympics
The al-Qaida branch in the Arabian Peninsula is believed to be planning a terror attack during the Olympic Games in London, scheduled to begin at the end of the month. According to a report in today's Sunday Times, quoting intelligence services, the organization has recruited a Norwegian Muslim convert who was supposed to hijack a U.S. passenger plane and crash it on a suicide mission. It is not clear though that the attack targeted one of the Olympic venues, despite the timing.

Friday night news dump: White House salaries edition
The White House released its annual report to Congress on staff salaries. At 4:39 p.m. on Friday. A quick review found the White House payroll appears to have grown since last year, going from $37.1 million in 2011 to $37.8 million in 2012. The number of employees listed also grew -- from 454 last year to 468 in 2012.

Heat Wave Smashing All-Time Records
High temperature records have been falling by the wayside so far this year, and the current heat wave now has more, including all-time records in jeopardy. Never mind highs near 100 degrees. The current heat wave has temperatures pushing 102, 105 even 108 degrees in portions of the Plains, Midwest, South and East.

UN envoy calls for transitional government in Syria
UN peace envoy Kofi Annan has said there is international agreement that a transitional government should be set up in Syria. This could include both members of the government and opposition, he said after talks in Geneva. But US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could not remain in power.

Australia introduces controversial carbon tax
Australia has introduced its highly controversial carbon tax, after years of bitter political wrangling. The law forces about 300 of the worst-polluting firms to pay a A$23 (£15; $24) levy for every tonne of greenhouse gases they produce. The government says the tax is needed to meet climate-change obligations of Australia - the highest emitter per-head in the developed world.

Kenya church attacks 'kill 16' in Garissa
Sixteen people have been killed in attacks on churches in the Kenyan town of Garissa near Somalia, say the Kenyan Red Cross and a medical official. Regional deputy police chief Philip Ndolo said balaclava-clad "goons" attacked the town's Catholic church and the African Inland Church (AIC). A combination of grenades and gunfire was used, police said.

Mexico set to elect new president
Mexicans are set to go to the polls in a presidential election dominated by the economy and war on drugs. Ex-governor Enrique Pena Nieto - seen by many as the leading candidate - is attempting to win the presidency back for the PRI party that ruled for years.

Iran pledges to counter 'malicious' oil embargo
Iran dismissed a European Union oil embargo which took effect on Sunday and said it was fully prepared to counter the impact of sanctions with a $150 billion war chest of foreign reserves. The EU ban on crude imports is part of a push by Western countries aimed at choking Iran's export earnings to try to force it to curb a nuclear program they fear includes weapons development.

The Tragedy of the Dumb Church
Don’t misunderstand me, I mean no disrespect when I use the term ‘dumb’. What I mean is that the Church is dumb in that they aren’t well educated in what they believe, fail miserably in fulfilling 1 Peter 3:15 that says all Christians should be prepared to give a reason for why they believe, and are woefully unable to handle any challenge to Christianity that comes from unbelievers or the cults.

Hillary Clinton:‘No Evidence’ DOJ Sought Required License to Send Guns to Mexico in ‘Fast and Furious’
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified in the House Foreign Relations Committee Thursday that there was "no record" that the Justice Department had given the State Department a "head up" about Operation Fast and Furious, in which guns were allowed to flow from the United States to drug traffickers in Mexico, and that the State Department had found "no evidence" that DOJ had applied for a license or waiver to send guns to a foreign country, which a member of the committee told her would have been required under U.S. law.

Washington DC region swelters after storm cuts power
Up to two million people are without power after violent storms hit the region around the US capital, Washington DC. The storms swept across West Virginia, Virginia, Washington and Maryland, with wind speeds of up to 75mph (120 kph). The power outages left many without air conditioning after a day of record-breaking 104F (40C) heat.

UNESCO: Nativity Church heritage site in 'Palestine'
The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on Friday became the first World Heritage Site to be listed under the name of Palestine. Dempsey: US-Israel drill to take place in fall
The United States and Israel are expected to hold a joint military exercise sometime around October, after postponing it earlier this year, the US chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Friday, confirming previous reports that it was back on track. "We rescheduled it for October-November time frame," US Army General Martin Dempsey said.

Egypt's President Mursi takes oath in historic moment
Egypt's new president, Mohamed Mursi, took his oath of office at the country's Constitutional Court Saturday afternoon, promising to protect the court's independence and respect the rule of law.
