Russian scientists alarmed by number of strong quakes striking the planet



April 23, 2012 – MOSCOW - Russian scientists announced last week alarming observations about the strong earthquakes that shook the Earth. In the first decade of the 21st century there were almost as many earthquakes measuring above 6.0 on the Richter scale as there were during the entire 20th century. 14 such cases were registered in the 2001-2011 period compared to 17 strong tremors during the 20th century. –Focus

Mass death of dolphins in Peru linked to viral infection?



April 23, 2012 – PERU - Investigations are on into the deaths of hundreds of dolphins that washed up on the northern coast of Peru. Around 877 carcasses of dolphins and porpoises were found on Peruvian beaches in two and half months. Peruvian officials and environmentalists are trying to unravel the mystery behind the phenomenon. No concrete reasons have been figured out yet but the authorities believe that it could possibly be a viral infection that may have killed the dolphins in huge numbers. While environmental groups in the country blame the seismic oil exploration work carried out by BPZ Energy Company for the dolphin deaths. “The most probable hypothesis is the possibility of an infection with a virus,” he said. “There are scientific articles about the incidence of morbillivirus, a type of distemper, in cetaceans in Peru, and that can be ruled out or proven next week,” told Deputy Environment Minister Gabriel Quijandria to Associated press. BPZ, a Houston-based company had carried out the oil exploration work between February 8 and April 8, off Northern Peru. Peruvian environmentalists have said that the sound waves generated from the oil exploration work could be the cause of the deaths. However, Quijandria said that so far there is no proof to link dolphin deaths to seismic work, according to the Associated Press report. Most of the carcasses found were already decomposed, making it difficult to study the cause of their deaths. However, authorities have also ruled out the possibility of deaths due to lack of food or poisoning, CNN reported quoting Andina News Agency. Mass dolphin deaths have been reported globally in recent years, raising concerns about the survival of the species. -IBT

Ecuador’s Tungurahua volcano blows its top- raining down gravel in neaby town



April 23, 2012 – ECUADOR – Over the weekend, the Tungurahua’s volcanic eruption had a strong explosion that caused gravel to fall down in the nearby town of Pillate, Ecuador. The explosion, characterized by its loud “cannon ball shot”, was immediately detected by locals and scientists observing the volcano’s progress. The explosion was later followed by a slight tremor and a constant pulsation of “high energy” said reports. The constant cloud coverage surrounding the volcano has caused scientists, from the Geophysical Institute branch of the National Polytechnic School to have trouble determining its current state. Most of the direct observations are conducted in the Guadalupe Observatory, the closest in the vicinity. Tungurahua, located in the Andes Mountains in Ecuador, is 5,016 meters high and its eruptions began in 1999. Since then, the volcano has transitioned from times of high activity and those of calm. However, Tungurahua is not the only volcano causing extreme damage and concern in the Hispanic world. Popocatépetl, located in Mexico City, has also been under close watch due to its recent activity which included ash blasts. -HSN

Blast at chemical plant in Japan kills 1 and injures 15



April 23, 2012 – TOKYO- A blast at a chemical plant in western Japan killed one worker and injured at least fifteen others on Sunday, police said. The accident occurred at a factory operated by comprehensive chemical manufacturer Mitsui Chemicals in Yamaguchi prefecture, some 700 kilometers (434 miles) southwest of Tokyo, an official at Yamaguchi prefectural police said. The deceased was a 22-year-old male employee, police said, with Jiji Press identifying him as Shota Sunakawa. Nine other company employees and workers for subcontract companies were severely or slightly injured, while at least four residents in the neighborhood were slightly injured, police said. “The fire is not extinguished yet as the fire department is cooling the plant while waiting for combustible materials to burn out,” he told. “It may take more than a few days for us to find out the cause of the accident, but we are investigating it as a case of professional negligence resulting in death and injury,” he said. The plant had been manufacturing materials to make adhesives, he said. –Daily Times

Science hit with double flops in a week: no dark matter around Sun, cosmic rays source not Gamma Ray Bursts



April 23, 2012 – SPACE - Here’s troubling news in the world of astrophysics, in which astronomers can’t seem to find the dark matter. As you may know dark matter is a much-speculated upon, but unknown substance that cannot be seen but appears to exist as it exerts a gravitational force on material around it. Astronomers first posited the existence of dark matter to explain why the outer portions of galaxies rotate quickly, and it now is also an important part of theories that explain how galaxies form and grow. Scientists believe there must be about five times as much dark matter in the universe as normal matter — atoms, planets, you and me. Last week, in a study that didn’t get the attention it probably deserves, astronomers said they could find any dark matter near our Sun. Existing theories predict that the average amount of dark matter in the Sun’s part of the galaxy should be in the range 1 to 2 pounds of dark matter in a volume the size of the Earth. The new measurements found nada. Zip. Zilch.“This is an article that we are going to have to take seriously,” Texas A&M astronomer Nick Suntzeff told me. Which is to say that if dark matter is not where our theories predict it will be, our theories probably have some serious issues. –Chron



Mystery of cosmic rays deepens: The mystery of the origin of the strongest cosmic rays has deepened as new clues into key suspects, the most powerful explosions in the universe, suggest they are likely not potential culprits, researchers say. Gamma-ray bursts are the most powerful explosions in the universe. They can emit as much energy as our sun during its entire 10-billion-year lifetime in anywhere from milliseconds to minutes. Some gamma-ray bursts are thought to be collapses of super massive stars — hypernovas — while others are thought to be collisions of black holes with other black holes or neutron stars,” said study co-author Spencer Klein of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. “Both types produce brief but intense blasts of radiation.” New evidence may now rule out gamma-ray bursts as sources of these. Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole in Antarctica, the boffins watched 300 gamma ray bursts (GRBs) while searching for the neutrinos that are believed to be linked with cosmic ray generation, and found none. “The unexpected absence of neutrinos from GRBs has forced a re-evaluation of the theory for production of cosmic rays and neutrinos in a GRB fireball and possibly the theory that high energy cosmic rays are generated in fireballs.” -Space, Register

Rising tension: North Korean army vows to turn Seoul to ashes



April 23, 2012 – SEOUL – North Korea’s military Monday threatened “special actions” soon to turn parts of the South Korean capital to ashes, accusing Seoul’s conservative government of defaming its leadership. The North has for months been criticizing the South’s President Lee Myung-Bak in extreme terms and threatening “sacred war” over perceived insults. There have been no incidents but the language has become increasingly vitriolic. Some analysts said they believe a military provocation is likely. “The special actions of our revolutionary armed forces will start soon to meet the reckless challenge of the group of traitors,” said a statement on the official news agency. The North said its targets are “the Lee Myung-Bak group of traitors, the arch criminals, and the group of rat-like elements including conservative media destroying the mainstay of the fair public opinion.” It said the actions “will reduce all… to ashes in three or four minutes… by unprecedented peculiar means and methods of our own style.” Tens of thousands rallied in Pyongyang last Friday, screaming hatred for Lee and calling for his death over alleged insults. Last week the nuclear-armed North accused Lee of “desecrating” mass celebrations marking the 100th anniversary on April 15 of the birth of Pyongyang’s founding president Kim Il-Sung. It bridled at anti-Pyongyang demonstrations in Seoul and at comments by Lee and conservative media. These questioned the cost of the anniversary celebrations for a nation suffering acute food shortages. Lee said the estimated $850 million cost of a rocket launch intended to mark the anniversary could have bought 2.5 million tons of corn. The launch, purportedly to put a satellite into orbit, was to have been a centerpiece of the celebrations. The rocket disintegrated after some two minutes in what was seen as an embarrassment for the regime. Monday’s statement castigated Lee for comments last Friday, which urged the North’s new leader Kim Jong-Un to reform agriculture and improve human rights. It also took issue with the South’s unveiling of a new cruise missile said to be able to reach any target in the North.
