Divers places: Western Turkey, near ancient city of Ephesus, rattled by twin earthquakes


December 27, 2011 – TURKEY - Two earthquakes occurring three hours apart caused a short-lived panic in the Kuşadası district of Aydın, a western province in Turkey near the old biblical city of Ephesus. The quakes, which registered 4.3 and 4.0 in magnitude, did not cause any loss of life or property damage. The Kandilli Observatory at Boğaziçi University and the Earthquake Research Institute said that the magnitude 4.3 tremor occurred at 7:59 on Tuesday morning. The second quake occurred at 9:51 a.m. The tremors were felt in Kuşadası, Selçuk, central Aydın and in the city of İzmir. “No negative consequences were suffered as a result of the earthquakes,” Kuşadası District Governor Mustafa Esen said. He also called on the relevant authorities and the press to refrain from statements that might cause panic in the public. –Today’s Zaman

Korean peninsula sees notable rise in the number of earthquakes



December 27, 2011 – SEOUL – The nation experienced more earthquakes than the yearly average this year, said the state’s weather agency Tuesday, causing concerns after Koreans witnessed a massive quake ravage its neighbor Japan earlier this year. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, 51 earthquakes higher than a magnitude of 2 shook Korea this year, which is higher than the 10-year average. However the KMA added that the magnitudes of the quakes were low. A 2.0 magnitude earthquake in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province on Jan. 1 kicked off the year and the last recorded tremor measuring 2.3 occurred on Christmas in Taebaek, Gangwon Province. When compared to the average of 42.9 quakes from 1999-2009, there was a sharp increase this year. During that period 2009 recorded 60 quakes, the most in a year. Of those 51 quakes, the nation experienced 9 that were higher than a magnitude of 3 and six earthquakes were reportedly felt by citizens. The strongest quake to shake the nation occurred on June 17 off the coast of Baegryeong Island. The 4.1 magnitude quake that shook buildings on the island was also felt as far off as Incheon, according to the KMA. Throughout the world there were 2,376 magnitude-5 quakes or higher. The number is much higher than the yearly average of 1,601 quakes. The KMA explained that the 605 aftershocks that occurred after the March quake in Japan were reflected in that number. In March, a government report estimated that more than 27,000 buildings would be completely destroyed, while 550,000 would be left damaged should a 6.5 magnitude earthquake occur in Seoul. The capital and surrounding areas could also see more than 7,700 people dead and 200,000 people injured or left homeless. Experts predict that a 6.5 magnitude earthquake is the biggest Seoul could see, considering its distance from the nearest fault line ― a 40,000-km circumference belt which runs along the edge of the Pacific. Korea has seen five quakes exceeding a magnitude of 5 since 1978, when the Korea Meteorological Administration began recording seismic activity. –Korea Herald

Why Russian scientists have listed the Siberian earthquake as a 9.5 event


December 28, 2011 – MOSCOW – The intensity of a powerful earthquake that rocked the southeastern part of Siberia on Tuesday reached 9.5, Russian Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a teleconference in the early hours of Wednesday. “The earthquake’s intensity in the epicenter has been estimated at 9.5. The main threat will come tomorrow morning. As soon as the people wake up, they will see cracks in the walls, stoves, and chimneys,” he said. It was reported earlier that an earthquake reaching 8-9 in the epicenter had been recorded in the Kaa-Khemsky district of Tyva 100 kilometers east of Kyzyl at a depth of 10 kilometers at 7:22 p.m. Moscow time on Tuesday. The earthquake’s magnitude reached 6.7. The tremors were felt in Tyva, Khakasia, the Krasnoyarsk territory and the Irkutsk region. Preliminary reports indicate that the quake did not cause casualties and significant destruction. The population of the Kaa-Khemsky district is about 12,700 people. The Russian earthquake scale: The Russian system measures earthquake intensity and the 9.5 of the Siberian quake does not reflect magnitude. The Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik scale, also known as the MSK or MSK-64, is a macroseismic intensity scale used to evaluate the severity of ground shaking on the basis of observed effects in an area of the earthquake occurrence. The scale was first proposed by Sergei Medvedev (USSR), Wilhelm Sponheuer (East Germany), and Vít Kárník (Czechoslovakia) in 1964. It was based on the experiences being available in the early 1960s from the application of the Modified Mercalli scale and the 1953 version of the Medvedev scale, known also as the GEOFIAN scale. With minor modifications in the mid-1970s and early 1980s, the MSK scale became widely used in Europe and the USSR. In early 1990s, the European Seismological Commission (ESC) used many of the principles formulated in the MSK in the development of the European Macroseismic Scale, which is now a de facto standard for evaluation of seismic intensity in European countries. MSK-64 is still being used in India, Israel, Russia, and throughout the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik scale is somewhat similar to the Modified Mercalli (MM) scale used in the United States. 6.6 magnitude earthquake strikes region of southwestern Siberia, Russia



December 27, 2011 – RUSSIA – An earthquake of 6.6 magnitude hit southwestern Siberia in Russia near the border with Mongolia on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey said. The earthquake registered at the very shallow depth of 6.9 km or just 4.3 miles below the earth’s surface. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 94 kilometers east of Kyzyl, Russia and about 3744 km (2326 miles) ENE of Moscow, Russia. The region is sparely inhabited and there have been no initial reports of damage or injuries but that may change. Saryg-Sep is the closest city to the quake’s epicenter and has a population of about 5,000 people and the earthquake was very shallow. Today’s 6.6 magnitude earthquake is believed to be the region’s strongest since the 6.3 earthquake hit in 1991. –The Extinction Protocol
