The Mystery of Daniel 11 Decoded

The book of Daniel is composed of two major sections. Daniel chapter 1 is the introduction to the entire book. It was written in Hebrew. Daniel chapters two through 7 are written in Aramaic, also known an Chaldee. Daniel chapters 8-12 were written in Hebrew. The book of Daniel is organized as a Chiasm, which is a literary device in which a sequence of ideas is presented and then repeated in reverse order. This writing style uses a unique repetition pattern for clarification and emphasis and helps you understand relationships between ideas. For example, Daniel, chapters 2 and 7 are intimately related. The prophecy of Daniel 2 uses 4 metals to illustrate the movement of world empires and in Daniel 7, 4 beasts are used to provide more detail about each empire. Chapter 7 also introduces the judgement of mankind that occurs before the second coming of Jesus. Daniel chapters 3 and 6 deal with the persecution of God's people by civil powers. Please note that the persecution arises for religious reasons. This is a foreshadow of what will trigger persecution at the time of the end. Daniel 12 describes a time of trouble such as never has been since there was a nation. It will be so terrible, it is beyond human imagination. Daniel chapters 4 and 5 deal with the fall of arrogant kings. These chapters describe the fall of King Nebuchadnezzer and King Balshazzar.

Daniel Chapters 8-12 are interconnected and describe Christ's work in the heavenly Sanctuary. Daniel 8 lays out the historical framework. It moves us through the stream of time beginning with the kingdom of Medo-Persia, transitioning to Greece, then Pagan Rome, and finally to Papal Rome, which is still reigning today. Daniel chapter 9 identifies the starting point of the 2300 day prophecy, it fortells the anointing of the Messiah, and his death on the cross and pinpoints the exact time when these events would occur. It also identifies the end of the 2300 day prophecy when the judgement of mankind will begin. Daniel chapter 10 describes in detail how the holy angel and Michael fought a supernatural battle with the demon prince of Persia. Both sides were struggling to influence King Cyrus. At last King Cyrus made the right decision to stand by his royal decree to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. The rebuilding of the temple was crucial to future events in earths history. The Sanctuary service was itself prophetic as it laid out the life and work of our Savior. During his ministry on earth, Jesus would cleanse the earthly temple twice. When Jesus talked with the Samaritan woman at the well, he foretold the passing of the sanctuary service. John 4:21 reads Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.



At the end of His ministry Jesus would leave the Sanctuary for the last time pronouncing the passing of an era. Matthew 23:38 reads, 38 See! Your house is left to you desolate; The curtain of the temple in Jerusalem was torn in two from top to bottom the moment that Jesus breathed his last signifying that the Most Holy place was now open to all mankind with no need of the mediation of an earthly priest. Matthew 27:50, 51 reads And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. The symbolic sacrificial lamb and the sanctuary were made obsolete when the life, death and resurrection of Jesus fullfilled prophectic symbols. Animal sacrifices pointing forward to the death of the Son of God were no longer necessary.

After his resurrection, he went to heaven and currently serves in the heavenly Sanctuary. Finally, in Daniel chapter 11, the angel describes in panoramic style, landmarks that unfold future world events almost 300 years before they actually began to unfold. Daniel 11 is difficult to understand because the cryptic descriptions are almost like reading newspaper headlines but without names or dates. However there are some major landmarks that help move us along earths history. Daniel 11 starts out describing literal historic events. Each sentence condenses quantities of information and large spans of time. In addition, many metaphors are used. The underlying Hebrew adds to the complexity of this chapter.
