Deadly icy spell grips much of Europe, including Greek islands
Icy temperatures across Europe have left more than 20 people dead and blanketed even the Greek islands and southern Italy in snow. Italy saw ferries and flights cancelled and schools in the south are expected to close on Monday. Turkey has also been badly affected. The Bosphorus was closed to shipping as a heavy snowstorm hit Istanbul.

France thwarts 24,000 cyber-attacks against defence targets
France says it was the subject of 24,000 cyber-attacks against defence targets last year. Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said such attacks were doubling every year and this year's presidential elections could be targeted. He said it would "naive" to think that France was immune to the type of cyber-campaign that targeted the US election, which has been blamed on Russia.

Thailand floods: 12 dead as record rainfall persists
At least 12 people have died and many villages been submerged after heavy rains caused severe flooding in southern Thailand. Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected with water levels reaching "roof-high" in some areas, Thailand's interior ministry said. Transport services, including flights, have been disrupted and rescue efforts are under way to reach those stranded.

ISIS calls on recruits to copy arson terror method used in Israel
Islamic State called upon its supporters and recruits to set fires as a form of terrorism in the January 6 issue of its monthly print publication, Rumiyah. In the article, entitled "Just Terror Tactics," ISIS cited the most recent wave of fires that spread across Israel in November 2016 as an example of an effective use of fire as a terror method. Through arson, operatives can "impose terror on an entire country," the terror organization stressed.

Israel is making “very big efforts” to prevent another anti-Israel resolution at the UN Security Council, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday. Netanyahu's comments came at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, in which he pointed out that the French-led Mideast summit in Paris is just a few days away.

Jerusalem ramming attack: Four killed as truck slams into crowd
Four people were killed and several others wounded after a truck rammed into several pedestrians adjacent to the Armon Hanatziv promenade in Jerusalem on Sunday, according to Magen David Adom. Among the fatalities were three women and one man in their 20s. MDA reported that it was treating 13 additional wounded people, of them, three in serious condition, one in moderate-to-serious condition and 9 in light condition.
