10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

Notice how the Lord said that He would cause someone of David's own household to raise up evil? The second born of David and Bathsheba was Solomon. What was Solomon's great sin that he brought upon the nation of Israel? He married all of these pagan wives and had pagan concubines so that his heart turned away from The God of Israel and he even worshipped at the pagan altars that he built for his wives gods.

But back to David and how his own hardened heart caused him to deal severely with the children of Ammon (that would be modern day Jordan).

Matthew Henry Commentary

12:26-31 To be thus severe in putting the children of Ammon to slavery was a sign that David's heart was not yet made soft by repentance, at the time when this took place.

We shall be most compassionate, kind, and forgiving to others, when we most feel our need of the Lord's forgiving love, and taste the sweetness of it in our own souls.


When thinking about loyalty, honor or commitment, what Bible character immediately comes to mind? Possibly, one may think about Joseph, Moses, Daniel or even Esther. But what about Uriah the Hittite? The events that exemplify this excellent soldier clearly express a committed character. Uriah was one of David's "mighty men" (2 Samuel 23:39).

Most scholars consider him a mercenary or a soldier serving for pay in a foreign army. He was a Gentile (Hittite), yet his name is clearly of Hebrew origin. It means, "Jehovah (Yahweh) is Light."

(Was his name changed during a specific time in his life, or did his parents choose a name that would link him to the God of Israel?) He could have been a proselyte to the Jewish faith. Bathsheba was his wife. Her father, Eliam, was also one of David's mighty men (2 Samuel 23:34). Commitment and courage characterized this comrade.
