Germany warns of threat from more than 500 'potential attackers'
Germany's interior minister has warned that the country is home to more than 500 Islamic militants who could be capable of carrying out assaults on their own or as members of "hit teams." Speaking in an interview with Bild newspaper, Thomas de Maiziere said there were currently at least 520 "potential attackers" in the country, which has been on edge since two Islamic State-inspired attacks in July.

Syria conflict: Bombs rain down as truce hopes rise
Air strikes on rebel-held areas of Syria reportedly killed at least 100 people hours after the US and Russia announced plans for a truce. An air strike on a market in Idlib killed up to 60 people while at least 45 died in strikes on Aleppo province, opposition activists say. A 10-day truce is meant to start on Monday, followed by co-ordinated air strikes against jihadist militants.

North Korea nuclear test: South would reduce Pyongyang 'to ashes'
South Korea has a plan to annihilate the North Korean capital if it shows any signs of mounting a nuclear attack, according to reports from Seoul. A military source told the Yonhap news agency every part of Pyongyang "will be completely destroyed by ballistic missiles and high-explosives shells". Yonhap has close ties to South Korea's government and is publicly funded.

Tanzania earthquake kills 13 and injures more than 200
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake has killed at least 13 people and injured 203 in northern Tanzania, the authorities say. The quake struck close to the border with Uganda and Rwanda near Lake Victoria. Images posted on social media showed significant damage to buildings in Bukoba, a city of more than 70,000 people where most casualties were reported.

Suspicious car with gas canisters found outside Marseille synagogue
A car containing gas canisters was found Saturday outside a synagogue in the southern port city of Marseille, French media reported. Police initially feared the vehicle found Saturday morning outside the Bar Yohaye Jewish Community Center and synagogue in Marseille’s 4th Arrondissement, east of the Saint-Charles railways station, was booby-trapped.

Iran, Russia start construction of new Iranian nuclear plant
Iran began building a second nuclear plant with Russian help on Saturday, in a $10 billion project which follows Tehran's landmark nuclear deal with world powers last year, state media reported. State television showed Iranian and Russian officials at launching ceremonies for the 10-year project which will include two power plants with a total capacity of more than 1,000 megawatts after their completion.

Super-gonorrhoea outbreak could be out of control as attempts to stop spread fail
An outbreak of super-gonorrhoea in the UK is out of control and efforts to stop it have been unsuccessful, health officials have warned. It is feared the sexually transmitted disease may be becoming increasingly resistant to treatment, prompting concerns further rapid spread could occur.

Saudi Arabia Hajj: Millions begin annual pilgrimage
About 1.5 million Muslims have begun the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, unperturbed by a 2015 stampede which killed more than 2,000 people. The pilgrims face new safety measures, including tighter security and ID bracelets, in a bid to prevent a repeat of last year's disaster. But tens of thousands of Shia Iranians are absent because of long-running tensions with Sunni Saudi Arabia.

Syrian conflict: US and Russia agree peace moves
Russia and the US have agreed to co-ordinate air strikes against Islamist militants in Syria, part of a detailed agreement to reduce the violence there. The plan will begin with a "cessation of hostilities" from sunset on Monday. Syrian forces will end combat missions in specified opposition-held areas. Russia and the US will then establish a joint centre to combat jihadist groups, including so-called Islamic State (IS).

IAF attacks in Syria following spillover fire
In response to mortar shell spill over in the Golan Heights the IDF attacked artillery belonging to the Syrian regime. The IDF said in a statement that it held Syrian authorities responsible for all actions that take place within its borders, adding that the IDF "will not allow any attempt to affect Israel's sovereignty or the safety of its people."

North Korea has taken a key step toward its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the mainland United States, analysts said Friday after Kim Jong Un ordered yet another nuclear test. The test, which Pyongyang said was a “nuclear warhead explosion,” appeared to be North Korea’s biggest yet.
