"So she gleaned in the field until even."

— Ruth 2:17




Let me learn from Ruth, the gleaner. As she went out to gather the ears of corn, so must I go forth into the fields of prayer, meditation, the ordinances, and hearing the word to gather spiritual food. The gleaner gathers her portion ear by ear; her gains are little by little: so must I be content to search for single truths, if there be no greater plenty of them. Every ear helps to make a bundle, and every gospel lesson assists in making us wise unto salvation. The gleaner keeps her eyes open: if she stumbled among the stubble in a dream, she would have no load to carry home rejoicingly at eventide. I must be watchful in religious exercises lest they become unprofitable to me; I fear I have lost much already—O that I may rightly estimate my opportunities, and glean with greater diligence. The gleaner stoops for all she finds, and so must I. High spirits criticize and object, but lowly minds glean and receive benefit. A humble heart is a great help towards profitably hearing the gospel. The engrafted soul-saving word is not received except with meekness. A stiff back makes a bad gleaner; down, master pride, thou art a vile robber, not to be endured for a moment. What the gleaner gathers she holds: if she dropped one ear to find another, the result of her day's work would be but scant; she is as careful to retain as to obtain, and so at last her gains are great. How often do I forget all that I hear; the second truth pushes the first out of my head, and so my reading and hearing end in much ado about nothing! Do I feel duly the importance of storing up the truth? A hungry belly makes the gleaner wise; if there be no corn in her hand, there will be no bread on her table; she labours under the sense of necessity, and hence her tread is nimble and her grasp is firm; I have even a greater necessity, Lord, help me to feel it, that it may urge me onward to glean in fields which yield so plenteous a reward to diligence.

And Ruth was a Gentile Woman, a Moabitess who became the wife of Boaz,

Not only did Ruth's mother-in-law no longer have a husband but her sons had also died which left her with daughter-in-laws. Ruth, a loving woman chose to stay with her mother-in-law, a Jewess who was returning to her home-land of Israel. She told her mother-in-law that her people would be her people and her God would be her own God.

After they returned to Israel, Naomi & Ruth settled at Bethlehem where Ruth worked in the Barley fields and was able to glean what was left in the fields to provide for herself and Naomi. Naomi needed a kinsman-redeemer. Here is the rest of the story:

A kinsman-redeemer was a relative who could redeem a poor person’s inheritance (Leviticus 25:25). In certain circumstances, where there was no heir, a near relative could act as kinsman-redeemer by marrying the relative’s widow to redeem the inheritance. A relative was not obligated to act as kinsman-redeemer, however. If no relative chose to help, the widow would probably live in poverty.


Naomi therefore suggested to her daughter-in-law a plan of action: “Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let [Boaz] know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do” (Ruth 3:3-4).

Ruth did as Naomi told her. Something startled Boaz in the middle of the night, and he awoke to discover a woman lying at his feet. Boaz asked who she was. Ruth identified herself and then seized the initiative: “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman-redeemer” (verse 9). Ruth was boldly asking Boaz for a pledge from him to marry her.

This same expression is used for God’s relationship with Israel: “I spread the corner of my garment over you” Ezekiel 16:8.

Ruth’s action was in accord with the law of levirate marriage, which required the initiative of the widow in seeking the marriage (Deuteronomy 25:5, 7-10).

Boaz felt honored by Ruth’s request because she was “a woman of noble character [Hebrew:‘esheth chail, the term applied to the ‘Proverbs 31 woman’]” (Ruth 3:11).

In due course, Boaz married Ruth and she bore him a son, Obed. Obed later became the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David (Ruth 4:17). Through David, Ruth became an ancestor of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5, 16).

This story ought to, once and for all, stop this nonsense that you have to be a certain color or race to be of the Tribe of Judah or that the Black Race is the Tribe of Judah, which does not follow the Biblical genealogy as told within the Book of Enoch which tells us the three sons of Noah were Shem, Ham & Japheth. Shem was white like Noah and from him came the lineage of the 12 Tribes of Israel. Out of Japheth came the Red Race and out of Ham came the Black race. This took place after the Flood of Noah.
