Beijing blasts Pentagon report on Chinese military as damaging trust
China condemned the U.S. Defense Department's annual report on the Chinese military...calling it deliberate distortion that has "severely damaged" mutual trust. In its annual report to Congress...the U.S. Defense Department said...China is expected to add substantial military infrastructure, including communications and surveillance systems, to artificial islands in the South China Sea this year.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lashed out at Iran Sunday for staging a Holocaust-themed cartoon contest that mocked the Nazi genocide of 6 million Jews during World War II and said the Islamic Republic was busy planning for another one. Iran has long backed armed groups committed to Israel's destruction and its leaders have called for it to be wiped off the map.

Iraq conflict: IS suicide bombers hit Taji gas plant
The Islamic State (IS) group has staged a suicide attack on a gas factory near Baghdad in which 14 people were killed and 20 wounded, Iraqi officials say. The assault began when three car bombs exploded at the gate of the plant in Taji, north of the capital. Six men wearing explosive belts rushed in and blew up gas tanks, before security forces won back the facility.

Venezuela crisis: Maduro threatens seizure of closed factories
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has threatened the seizure of factories that have stopped production, and the jailing of their owners. In a speech to supporters in the capital Caracas, he said the country had to recover the means of production, to counter its deep economic crisis. On Friday, he introduced a new, nationwide state of emergency.

Egypt jails 51 for protesting against Saudi islands deal
Egypt has sentenced 51 people to two years each in prison for protesting against a decision last month to cede two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia. There were 33 defendants present in the Cairo courtroom to hear the verdicts, while the rest were out on bail. Family and friends of the defendants cried in shock outside the courthouse, reports said.

Jordanian parliament speaker: We oppose the peace treaty with Israel
Jordanian House Speaker, Atef Tarawneh, has stated that the Jordanian parliament, which represents the Jordanian people, adamantly disagrees with the government over the peace treaty with Israel. ..."The Jordanian parliament is an independent authority which represents the Jordanian people. Its opinion toward the peace treaty with Israel is different in essence from the government's position," Tarawneh said.
