New discovery means more U.S. states will face a risk from Zika
For the first time in the Western Hemisphere, researchers have detected the Zika virus in Aedes albopictus, the mosquito species known as the “Asian tiger,” a finding that increases the number of U.S. states potentially at risk for transmission of the disease. ...Unlike the aegypti mosquito, which is mostly present in southern United States and along the Gulf Coast, the albopictus has a range as far north as New England and the lower Great Lakes.

Google patents device that you inject into your eyeball
Up next in "terrifying things I don't ever want to have done": Google has filed a patent for a vision-correcting electronic device that has to be injected directly into your eye. The device...designed to help the focusing of light onto the retina...will contain its own storage, radio and lens and will apparently be powered wirelessly from an energy harvesting antenna.

Baghdad bomb targets Shia pilgrims
A bomb has exploded in Baghdad, killing at least 21 people, Iraqi police and hospital workers have said. The blast, near a livestock market in the city's outskirts, is thought to have targeted passing Shia pilgrims. They were on their way to a shrine in the Kadhimiya district to take part in religious commemoration ceremonies.

Argentina: President Macri's reforms denounced by protesters
Thousands of Argentines have staged a noisy protest against job cuts imposed under President Mauricio Macri's economic reforms. The demonstration was organised by two major labour unions, the CGT and CTA, who united against the president's cuts to spending and public sector jobs. The unions say that 100,000 workers have lost their jobs in the public and private sectors since President Macri came to power.

Russia challenges US after Baltic jet face-off
Russia says it was right to confront a US Air Force reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea on Friday. The Pentagon said a Russian jet fighter acted in an "unsafe and unprofessional manner", and performed a barrel roll over its plane. Russia said that the American jet had turned off its transponder signal, which helps others identify it.

Germany AfD meeting: Clashes before right-wing conference
Hundreds of left-wing demonstrators have tried to block people entering a right-wing party conference in the German city of Stuttgart. The Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) party is expected to re-brand itself as openly anti-Islamic during the meeting. Police, who surrounded several hundred protesters, fired pepper spray at crowds. Close to 1,000 officers were deployed.

Sailors rush for tattoos as US Navy bends rules to recruit
Until now, sleeve tattoos have been barred under military regulations. The Navy is scrapping the ban -- and going further still -- to adopt the most lenient rules on body art of any US military service. From next month, sailors will also be allowed a tattoo on their neck -- up to one-inch across -- and restrictions will be lifted on ink below the knee or elbow, including on the hands.

The US Supreme Court has approved a rule change that would allow law enforcement to remotely search computers located anywhere in the US. Franklin Graham Voices Support for Target Boycott
Evangelical leader Franklin Graham has announced that he stands in solidarity with those who are boycotting Target over the retail store’s new restroom policy, which allows transgender people to use the restroom of their choosing. The Christian Post reports the the president of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Associated wrote that he supported the Target boycott in a Facebook post.
