North Korea fires submarine-launched missile: South Korea
North Korea fired what appeared to be a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) on Saturday off its east coast, South Korea said, amid concerns that it might conduct a nuclear test or a missile launch ahead of a key ruling party meeting in May. The North fired the missile to the northeast from an area off its east coast at about 6:30 p.m. local time (0930 GMT), the South's office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Illegal immigrant families crossing border at record pace in 2016
Illegal immigrant families are streaming across the border at record pace, according to new Border Patrol statistics released Friday morning that show more than 32,000 have been caught trying to sneak into the U.S. That’s nearly 40 percent higher than the previous record of 2014... suggesting that the government’s relaxed enforcement policies have backfired and invited a new wave of illegal crossers.

China denies reports of massing troops at North Korea border
China's Defense Ministry on Friday denied reports that Chinese troops were massing on the North Korean border, ahead of a possible fifth North Korean nuclear test, saying its deployments there were normal. The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said earlier this week that China had sent 2,000 troops to the border, a story picked up by Russian and Iranian news outlets, among others.

Iran nuclear: US to buy 32 tonnes of heavy water from Tehran
The US is buying 32 tonnes of heavy water, which is used in some nuclear reactors, from Iran. The US State Department said the $8.6m (£6m) purchase was designed to help Iran meet its obligations under the nuclear deal signed last year. Officials said the heavy water, which can also be used to produce weapons-grade plutonium, would be resold for research purposes.

Belize-Guatemala border tensions rise over shooting
Tensions between Guatemala and Belize over a border dispute have risen sharply after a shooting incident in which a Guatemalan teenager died. Guatemala says the 13-year-old boy was attacked by Belizean soldiers. Belize says its troops shot in self-defence after coming under fire. Belize also accuses Guatemala of "amassing" troops along the border.

A university professor has been hacked to death in Bangladesh, in an attack police say is similar to killings of secular bloggers and atheists by suspected Islamist extremists. ...He was attacked with machetes by unidentified assailants...Police believe that he may have been targeted by suspected Islamist extremists because he was involved in cultural activities.

Russia Reportedly Fired On Israeli Jets In Syria
It was reported on Friday morning that Russia fired on Israeli Air Force (IAF) planes at least twice in the past six months.
