For it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem

This scripture of Luke 13, verse 33 leaves a question.

31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.

32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

It sounds as if to say that a prophet of Yahuah cannot perish if in the city of Jerusalem. Yahusha was taken outside the northern gate to the street level below Skull Hill where he perished.

Where do the two witnesses perish? Revelation 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

Yahusha says that a prophet can not die in the city of Jerusalem. He, Himself did not die within the city but outside the city gates. So, He has either changed His mind or the Translators have misunderstood His Words.

It leaves a person in a bit of a confused state. And even the debate of who the Two witness are is not a certainty. Take a look at this article.

Question: "Who are the two witnesses in the book of Revelation?"

Answer: There are three primary viewpoints on the identity of the two witnesses in Revelation 11:3-12: (1) Moses and Elijah, (2) Enoch and Elijah, (3) two unknown believers whom God calls to be His witnesses in the end times. (1) Moses and Elijah are seen as possibilities for the two witnesses due to the witnesses' power to turn water into blood (Revelation 11:6), which Moses is known for (Exodus chapter 7), and their power to destroy people with fire (Revelation 11:5), which Elijah is known for (2 Kings chapter 1). Also giving strength to this view is the fact that Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus at the transfiguration (Matthew 17:3-4). Further, Jewish tradition expected Moses and Elijah to return in the future. Malachi 4:5 predicted the return of Elijah, and the Jews believed that God’s promise to raise up a prophet like Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15, 18) necessitated his return.

(2) Enoch and Elijah are seen as possibilities for the two witnesses because they are the two individuals whom God has taken to heaven apart from experiencing death (Genesis 5:23; 2 Kings 2:11). The fact that neither Enoch or Elijah have experienced death seems to qualify them to experience death and resurrection, as the two witnesses experience (Revelation 11:7-12). Proponents of this view claim that Hebrews 9:27 (all men die once) disqualifies Moses from being one of the two witnesses, as Moses has died once already (Deuteronomy 34:5). However, there are several others in the Bible who died twice—e.g., Lazarus, Dorcas, and the daughter of the synagogue ruler—so there is really no reason why Moses should be eliminated on this basis.

View (3) essentially argues that Revelation chapter 11 does not attach any famous identity to the two witnesses. If their identities were Moses and Elijah, or Enoch and Elijah, why would Scripture be silent about this? God is perfectly capable of taking two "ordinary" believers and enabling them to perform the same signs and wonders that Moses and Elijah did. There is nothing in Revelation 11 that requires us to assume a "famous" identity for the two witnesses.

Which view is correct? The possible weakness of (1) is that Moses has already died once, and therefore could not be one of the two witnesses, who die, which would make Moses a contradiction of Hebrews 9:27. Proponents of (1) will argue that all of the people who were miraculously resurrected in the Bible (e.g., Lazarus) later died again. Hebrews 9:27 is viewed, then, as a "general rule," not a universal principle. There are no clear weaknesses to view (2), as it solves the "die once" problem, and it makes sense that if God took two people to heaven without dying, Enoch and Elijah, it was to prepare them for a special purpose. There are also no clear weaknesses to view (3). All three views are valid and plausible interpretations that Christians can have. The identities of the two witnesses is an issue Christians should not be dogmatic about.

I certainly do not know the answer but do know there are still lots of questions that need to be studied. That is what this site is all about. Thank you Steven.

And then there was this scripture posted by Steven that adds to this queston.

And here is a second Witness that Steven posted today also concerning that no prophet can be killed within the city.

Acts 7

58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Re: For it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem

Gerlinda,

About your comment about the fact that the two witnesses died in Jerusalem, yet conflicts with Luke 13:33:

Quote:

So, He has either changed His mind or the Translators have misunderstood His Words.
end of quote:

I looked up the various translations for Luke 13:33 and quote seven of them which all agree with one another, but not at all with the KJV translation:

The Bible in Basic English
Luke 13:33 (BBE) But I have to go on my way today and tomorrow and the third day, for it is not right for a prophet to come to his death outside Jerusalem.

The Complete Jewish Bible
Luke 13:33 (CJB) Nevertheless, I must keep travelling today, tomorrow and the next day; because it is unthinkable that a prophet should die anywhere but in Yerushalayim.

Good News Translation
Luke 13:33 (GNT) Yet I must be on my way today, tomorrow, and the next day; it is not right for a prophet to be killed anywhere except in Jerusalem.

The Message Bible
Luke 13:33 (MSG) Besides, it's not proper for a prophet to come to a bad end outside Jerusalem.

New Century Version
Luke 13:33 (NCV) Yet I must be on my way today and tomorrow and the next day. Surely it cannot be right for a prophet to be killed anywhere except in Jerusalem.

New Living Translation
Luke 13:33 (NLT) Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn’t do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem!

Weymouth New Testament
Luke 13:33 (WNT) "Yet I must continue my journey to-day and to-morrow and the day following; for it is not conceivable that a Prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.

As you see, you are correct thinking that the translators of the King James Version have misunderstood the intent of His Word and have not translated Luke 13:33 correctly. These translators have understand what is meant, and so there is no conflict in that the two witnesses of Revelation 11:10 will die within Jerusalem.

Re: For it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem

I really want to thank Gloria for taking the time to research this matter as thoroughly as she has.

This is another example of how the KJV has presented an opposite understanding of the scriptures.

Yes, Yahusha was crucified outside of the original City Walls yet outside those walls, the extended city did exist. It would like any city that has grown beyond it's original foundational walls

So, the real message is that it would NOT be conceivable that a Prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.
