INTENSIFYING COSMIC RAYS
For the past year, neutron monitors around the Arctic Circle have sensed an increasing intensity of cosmic rays. Polar latitudes are a good place to make such measurements, because Earth's magnetic field funnels and concentrates cosmic radiation there. Turns out, Earth's poles aren't the only place cosmic rays are intensifying.

Zika virus transmitted through sex in 2 possible cases – US health authority
There are two recorded cases when the highly dangerous Zika virus may have been transmitted through sexual intercourse, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The WHO says between 3 and 4 million people may have been infected this year alone. A test revealed high levels of the virus in his semen even after it had been no longer present in his blood samples, the New York Times reported.

ISIS wants own sea power to carry out attacks in Mediterranean – NATO naval chief
Islamic State militants want to build their own maritime force to carry out terror attacks on cruise or commercial ships in the Mediterranean Sea using sophisticated sea-based weapons, NATO’s naval commander warns.

INCREASING CHANCE OF FLARES
NOAA forecasters have boosted the odds of an M-class flare today to 25%. The probable source would be sunspot AR2488, which has developed an unstable 'beta-gamma' magnetic field with pent-up energy for strong explosions. Any M-flares today could produce minor shortwave radio blackouts.

Magnitude 3.5 earthquake strikes San Andreas Fault off Calif. coast
While quakes in the Ferndale-Eureka area are very common, the region has been more active recently with a 4.9 magnitude quake hitting a connected fault line a few hundred miles north, and 21 other quakes above magnitude 2.5 hitting that area in the past 30 days. The largest was a 4.4 centered south of Eureka on the San Andreas Fault.

Xenotransfusion research currently focusses on pigs, not apes, and it’s not just because pigs are abundant. They’re blood actually is quite similar to human blood. The size of red blood cells is similar. This is not a new guideline...An Israeli official said that "it is hard to believe that customs officials would randomly decide to publish a notice...It's convenient for them to present it as being a technical issue but in the US things never happen just by chance."

A Russian Su-27 jet fighter came within 20 feet of a U.S. RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea on Monday in Moscow’s latest military provocation involving dangerous aerial encounters. “On Jan. 25 an RC-135 aircraft flying a routine route in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner,” Navy Capt. HIV becoming resistant to key drug, study finds
Strains of HIV are becoming resistant to an antiretroviral drug commonly used to prevent and fight the virus, research has suggested. HIV was resistant to the drug Tenofovir in 60% of cases in several African countries, according to the study, covering the period from 1998 to 2015. The research, led by University College London, looked at around 2,000 HIV patients worldwide.

Sophisticated geometry - the branch of mathematics that deals with shapes - was being used at least 1,400 years earlier than previously thought, a study suggests.
