IDF expands missile fortification of strategic sites
The IDF Home Front Command and government ministries have completed fortification work to secure several strategically vital sites against rocket and missile attacks, a senior IDF source said. Work to secure dozens more sensitive infrastructure sites will commence soon, enabling them to continue to function even if hit by rockets or missiles, the military source told The Jerusalem Post.

Major 6.1 magnitude earthquake hits off south-east Malaga in Spain
A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck in the early hours of Monday morning in the Mediterranean between Morocco and Spain, 100 miles south-east of Malaga, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The shallow quake hit at 4.22am 39 miles (62km) north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 101 miles (164km) east-southeast of Gibraltar, USGS said. It was followed by a 5.3-magnitude tremor.

Russian economy hit by oil price slide
Russia's economy contracted by 3.7% in 2015, according to preliminary figures published by the country's statistics service. Retail sales plunged by 10% and capital investment fell by 8.4% in the economy's worst performance since 2009. In contrast, Russian GDP increased by 0.6% in 2014.

IS in Afghanistan: We will bury them, says President Ghani
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has promised to "bury" the Islamic State (IS) militant group, whose local offshoot has clashed with government forces and Taliban fighters. In a BBC interview, Mr Ghani said IS was "not an Afghan phenomenon" and its atrocities had "alienated the people". "Afghans are now motivated by revenge," he said. "They [IS] have confronted the wrong people."

East Asia cold snap 'kills 85 in Taiwan'
A cold snap sweeping across East Asia has killed at least 85 people in Taiwan and stranded 60,000 tourists in South Korea. Taiwanese media reported deaths from hypothermia and cardiac disease following a sudden drop in temperature over the weekend. Meanwhile heavy snow forced the closure of the airport on the Korean holiday island of Jeju, cancelling flights.

RTÉ reports that crew members became aware of a threat after a written note was discovered. The plane landed at the airport at 11:02 local time on Sunday and was met by emergency services.

7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Alaska
(CNN)A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska early Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake's epicenter hit near Cook Inlet, 162 miles southwest of Anchorage. It was about 50 miles deep. Joshua Veldstra, a professional photographer who lives in Homer, said the earthquake lasted about 30 seconds.
