California mudslides leave drivers stranded
Heavy rains has caused flooding and mudslides in foothill communities north of Los Angeles, swamping cars, stranding drivers and prompting authorities to close several major roads. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for parts of northwestern Los Angeles County and northeastern Ventura County, advising motorists to avoid those areas.

Nigeria blasts: Dozens dead as Maiduguri mosque targeted
At least 39 people have died after multiple explosions in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri, an emergency official says. Three female suicide bombers, thought to be aged between 11 and 15, struck on Friday morning, an official with the National Emergency Management Agency told BBC Hausa. It follows bomb attacks on a mosque on Thursday, which killed at least 32.

UN Security Council to meet on Israeli-Palestinian violence
The United Nations Security Council will hold a special meeting on Friday to discuss the recent spate of violence between Israel and the Palestinians in which 39 people have been killed over the past two weeks. The meeting, which diplomats said was called at the request of council member Jordan, will include a briefing from the UN secretariat on the situation on the ground and will take place at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT), the United Nations said on Thursday.
