Jordan threatens to recall ambassador
The Jordianian government plans to reconsider its diplomatic stance because of developments at the Temple Mount, in order to take effective action "required to stop the Israeli attacks at al-Aqsa Mosque", Jordanian government sources told London-based newspaper al-Hayat. The sources added that there is pressure in the parliament to take more drastic steps, recalling the Jordanian ambassador from Israel – which occurred last year.

Syrian crisis: Russia vows to intensify air strikes
Russia has pledged to intensify its air strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, saying the bombing has significantly weakened the militants. A Russian military official said "panic and desertion" had started among the militants and some 600 "mercenaries" were trying to escape to Europe. However, Britain said Russia's strikes were supporting its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Guatemala landslide deaths rise to 73, with hundreds missing
The Guatemalan authorities say the number of people killed when a hillside collapsed on houses in the village of El Cambray, 15km (nine miles) outside the capital, has risen to 73. They said another 350 people were still believed to be missing under tonnes of rock and earth that slipped onto homes on Thursday night. Rescue teams were using dogs to try to reach people trapped under the rubble.

France floods: 16 dead on Riviera after storms
Violent storms and flooding have hit south-eastern France, killing at least 16 people with three more missing, officials say. Three elderly people drowned when their retirement home near the city of Antibes was inundated with floodwater. Others died trapped in their cars in tunnels and underground car parks as the waters rose.

'Wide-scale operation may be needed to control Jerusalem terror'
A wide-scale operation may be needed to counter the recent wave of deadly terror attacks against Israelis, said Minister of Intelligence Israel Katz on Sunday. "We will toughen our measures against the Palestinians," he said speaking to Army Radio. "There could be a need for another Operation Defensive Shield."

In South China Sea, a Tougher U.S. Stance
The United States is poised to send naval ships and aircraft to the South China Sea in a challenge to Beijing’s territorial claims to its rapidly-built artificial islands... The move toward a somewhat more muscular stance follows talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama...which fell far short of a breakthrough over how territorial disputes should be settled in the strategic South China Sea.

The number of Americans not in the labor force exceeded 94 million for the second time in a row last month hitting a new record high, according to new government data released Friday morning. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that a record 94,610,000 people (ages 16 and over) were not in the labor force in September. In other words they were neither employed nor had made specific efforts to find work in the prior four weeks.

Guatemala mudslide leaves hundreds missing
Rescue workers in Guatemala are digging through rubble from a mudslide that hit a village not far from the capital, in search of hundreds missing. At least 26 bodies have so far been recovered from the village of El Cambray Dos, rescue services say. Heavy rains swept a torrent of boulders and mud onto houses on Thursday, 15km (nine miles) east of Guatemala City.

Nigeria's Abuja hit by two blasts with at least 15 dead
Two bomb blasts that hit the outskirts of the Nigerian capital Abuja have killed at least 15 people and injured many more, officials say. The first struck near a police station in Kuje, 25 miles (40km) from Abuja. The second hit a bus stop in Nyanya. No group has said it carried out the attacks yet but suspicion has fallen on Boko Haram Islamists.
