Nebraska declares state of emergency in bird flu outbreak
Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts declared a state of emergency on Thursday, after federal agriculture officials confirmed a second farm site had tested positive for the rapidly spreading avian flu virus. The declaration follows earlier, similar actions by governors in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, whose states have all been hard hit by the ongoing bird flu outbreak that has led to the culling of more than 33 million birds in 16 U.S. states.

4.6 earthquake centred near Seddon rocks central NZ
A strong earthquake measuring 4.6 has hit Marlborough. GeoNet is reporting it was located 5km south east of Seddon, south of Blenheim followed by a 3.3 located 30km east of Turangi. The quakes hit shortly after 5.30pm.

Islamic State (IS) has released an audio message it says is from its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, which if confirmed would be the first in months. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas added preconditions to restarting the peace talks with Israel. ...Abbas called for the halt of all construction in the West Bank and for the immediate release of Palestinians that were imprisoned before the Oslo Accords who were supposed to be released in 2014. He also said that peace talks will not resume unless he is guaranteed that they will last a full year.

The last intact section of one of Antarctica's mammoth ice shelves is weakening fast and will likely disintegrate completely in the next few years, contributing further to rising sea levels, according to a NASA study released on Thursday.

At least 12 dead after attack on Nigeria's Maiduguri city
At least six civilians and six members of a youth vigilante group were killed in an attack by Boko Haram militants on Nigeria's northeastern city Maiduguri, two military sources said on Thursday. The attack was reported late on Wednesday in Maiduguri, which is the capital of Borno state and the birthplace of the Islamist jihadi group.

Syria’s circle of hell
The Syrian conflict entered its fifth year this March, a fact barely registered around the world. Brazil gun killings rise to highest level in 35 years
A report on violence in Brazil says around 42,000 people were shot dead in 2012 - the highest figures for gun crime in 35 years. The study, by the UN and the government on the most recent available data, said almost all the deaths were murders. More than half of those killed were young men under the age of 30 - two-thirds were described as black.

The Saudis just went nuclear on their Obama snub
President Barack Obama's summit with Arab leaders doesn't seem to be going as planned. First, King Salman of Saudi Arabia embarrassed the Obama administration when he backed out of the summit after the White House announced he was going to attend. The last-minute move was widely perceived as a deliberate snub, and the Saudis offered only a vague excuse for King Salman's absence.
