Indiana treasurer Richard Mourdock warned that the possibility of U.S. Bankruptcy will push the country the way of Nazi Germany during a speech on Saturday.

“The people of Germany in a free election selected the Nazi party because they made great promises that appealed to them because they were desperate and destitute. And why is that? Because Germany was bankrupt,” Mourdock said to a crowd gathered at the Indiana Republican Convention on Saturday.

In the 1930’s during the Great Depression and under the pressure of the Treaty of Versailles, the National Socialist Party showered the poor with bread and put millions of unemployed to work with government programs before leading the entire world into war.

“Over the next several years, every time a program began to fall apart, Mr. Hitler’s party was very, very good at dividing Germany by pointing to this group or that group,” Mourdock continued. “First they went after their political opponents. Then they went after the aristocrats. Then they went after the trade unionists. And ultimately, of course, they went after the Jews. They deprived them of their property, their rights, their citizenship, and for millions their humanity. Because they were bankrupt!”

I want to share what my mother told me concerning the days just prior to the rise of Hitler.

There were 15 children in her family. Her mother died in childbirth at the last one. Her father was left to support the rest and the older sisters became mothers to the younger.

Germany was in dire economic straits, no jobs to be had and the prices of everything was going sky high on the produce that could be gotten. Her father pressured the three older boys to find work. Day after day, they trudged all around the surrounding villages looking for any kind of job but night after night, they would come home, heads hanging low because there was no work to be had that would pay. The oldest boy would try to talk moral support to his younger brothers as they faced their father each night with the fact there was no money to go into the family coffer. The boy was a tender souled one who just could not take the verbal abuse of his father against the younger boys and himself anymore.

He hung himself.

Hitler and the people who were bringing about the Third Reich knew exactly what they were doing. Germany was desperate and jobs were promised by Hitler's party. The German people would elect anyone, be it the devil himself, to get food for their families. After his election, Hitler got the cheap labor he need for building the Autobahm which allowed Germany's war machines to travel very quickly across the Land in his conquest over Europe.
