Al Qaeda's leader says Iraqi branch in Syria must return to fight at home
Iraqi al Qaeda's entry into Syria's civil war caused "a political disaster" for Islamist militants there, the movement's global leader Ayman al-Zawahri said in a video message, urging the faction to redouble its efforts in Iraq instead. Zawahri has repeatedly tried to end infighting between the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and another al Qaeda-aligned group, the Nusra Front.

Lapid: Peace with Hamas-Fatah unity a possibility
Finance Minister Yair Lapid said that future peace talks with a Palestinian unity government including Hamas could be possible, reported the Wall Street Journal on Friday. With tens of thousands of Russian troops massed near Ukraine’s eastern frontier, violence of the kind that claimed about 40 lives in the port city of Odessa might provide Moscow with a reason to invade.

Syria truce 'to let rebels withdraw from besieged Homs'
Opposition fighters are to be allowed to withdraw from besieged parts of the Syrian city of Homs under a deal with the government, reports say. Rebels will be allowed to pull back to opposition-held areas north of Homs, activists say. The Syrian government has not commented on the reports. Fighters have held areas around the Old City despite a two-year siege. Earlier this year civilians were let out.

US President Obama calls for death penalty review
US President Barack Obama plans to ask Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate problems surrounding the application of the death penalty. The US leader's announcement comes just days after a botched execution in Oklahoma drew widespread attention. Mr Obama called inmate Clayton Lockett's prolonged death earlier this week from an improperly delivered lethal injection "deeply troubling".

Afghanistan landslide: Rescuers search for missing
Rescuers in Afghanistan are sifting through mud for a second day after a landslide that is feared to have buried at least 2,000 people. The UN said more than 350 bodies had been recovered in the remote north-east Afghan province of Badakhshan. Hundreds of homes were buried on Friday when a section of a mountain collapsed following torrential rain.
