Turkey: F-16 fighter scrambled after suspected hijack
Turkey scrambled an F-16 fighter jet on Friday to escort a commercial flight after a passenger allegedly made a bomb threat, demanding to go to the Winter Olympic games in Sochi. Footage from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen airport showed the Pegasus airlines plane after safely landing from the Ukrainian city of Kharkov.

Number of children dying in Afghan violence increases, as Taliban bombs hit civilians
The number of children killed and wounded in Afghanistan's war jumped by 34 percent last year as the Taliban stepped up attacks across the country and continued to lay thousands of roadside bombs, the United Nations said Saturday.

Syria crisis: Evacuation operation in Homs begins
An operation has begun to evacuate the first group of civilians from the besieged city of Homs in Syria, as fighting has paused. Six buses escorted by UN envoys and ambulances have entered a rebel-held area to pick up 200 people. Up to 3,000 are thought to be trapped in Homs. The UN-negotiated ceasefire between Syrian forces and rebels should also allow aid to reach Homs on Saturday.

Power cuts as Storm Qumaira batters west of France
A fierce storm has battered the west of France, leaving 55,000 people without power and flooding houses and commercial buildings in Brittany. Storm Qumaira brought winds of up to 120km/h (75mph), cutting power mainly in the Loire Valley, but also Normandy. Floodwater swamped streets in the Breton towns of Quimperle and Morlaix.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner says his party has all but ruled out passing immigration legislation before November's midterm elections. Mr Boehner blamed the inaction on scepticism that US President Barack Obama would properly enforce such reforms. The Democratic president has made immigration a top domestic priority.

The world is witnessing the riveting spectacle of terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq feuding and grading each other in terms of their brutality, lack of collegial behavior, and ultimate objectives.
