The United Nations has said it estimates 3.7 million people are in acute need of food in South Sudan as a result of the civil conflict there. The UN's humanitarian co-ordinator in South Sudan Toby Lanzer told the BBC $1.3bn (£790m) was needed to deal with the crisis. Violence broke out in South Sudan on 15 December, starting as violence between rival army factions.
Iran receives $500 million installment, says it won't give up centrifuge research
Iran has received the first portion of unfrozen funds, $500 million, that they are set to receive as the beginning phases of the nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers sets into motion, AFP reported on Sunday. Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told ISNA news agency Saturday that the transfer of funds was all done according to the agreement.
Assad 'armed to the teeth,' stockpiling weapons of mass destruction
The Sunday Times quoted both Israeli and Russian sources as claiming that Syrian President Bashar Assad is stockpiling weapons of mass destruction in Alawite enclaves on the western coast of Syria. According to the Times, these sources report that the work has been ongoing despite the first round of peace talks between Assad's regime and the rebels, held last week in Geneva.
China accuses Japan of stoking tensions with air defence rumours
China has accused Japan of heightening regional tensions with “rumours” that Beijing planned to declare a new air defence zone over the South China Sea. Foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said right-wing forces in Japan had repeatedly made such allegations with the intention of shifting international attention from the “plot” to change Japan’s pacifist constitution, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Lebanese extremist group says it planted car bomb
A shadowy Lebanese extremist group has claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing in a Shiite town that killed at least three people. The Nusra Front in Lebanon said on Twitter that the bombing in the northeast town of Hermel on Saturday was to punish the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, which fights alongside forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Two Afghan election campaigners working for presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah have been shot dead in the western city of Herat. The shootings took place the day before campaigning officially starts for the 5 April vote. Local TV reports said gunmen attacked the two as they left a campaign office.
Syria chemical weapons: Kerry asks Russia to hasten removal
US Secretary of State John Kerry has asked Russia to press its ally Syria into speeding up the removal of chemical weapons. The US says only about 4% of chemical weapons declared by the Syrian government have so far been removed. Mr Kerry raised the issue with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, officials said.

Schoolchildren among 14 killed by Indonesia volcano eruption
Fourteen people, including four schoolchildren, were killed Saturday after they were engulfed in scorching ash clouds spat out by Indonesia's Mount Sinabung in its biggest eruption in recent days, officials said. Saudi Arabian diplomats and military officials refused to meet with a bipartisan delegation of senior congressional staffers who visited the Middle Eastern country last week, an unusual snub that suggests increased tension between the U.S. and a key ally.
