Baking soda is another item to include in your prep. Unopened baking soda remains good indefinitely. The shelf life of opened baking soda depends on how it is stored. The best way to store it is in a tightly covered container to keep it dry and odor free. If stored correctly, opened baking soda can also last indefinitely.Check out the following uses of baking soda in a survival situation…

1. For Brushing Your Teeth

You can use baking soda as alternative toothpaste; just mix baking soda and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. You can also just dip your toothbrush with toothpaste into baking soda. It also helps you whiten your teeth.

2. Use As An Antacid

If you’re experiencing heartburn, stomachache or indigestion, you can use baking soda to get rid of the pain. In a half glass of water add half a teaspoon of baking soda then drink it. Make it sure that before swallowing the baking soda is completely dissolved.

3. For Itchy Skin

Baking soda also helps you relieve itchy skin and insect bites and has a soothing effect. Mix water and baking soda make it into a paste and apply it to the affected are

4. Soothe Your Feet

If you want to soothe your feet after walking a very long distance, all you have to do is mix 3 tablespoon and warm water into a tub until the baking soda was dissolved. Soak your feet and scrub it gently.

5. Make Soap

You can make soap out of baking soda, just add half cup of baking soda to your bath.

6. Clean Floors

Mix half cup of baking soda and a bucket of warm water. Mop and rinse your floor. If you want to get rid of scuff marks use a clean sponge, then rinse.

7. Deodorize Your Sneakers

Baking soda helps you deodorize you sneakers, put some baking soda into your sneakers and shake them. Do this before wearing your sneakers.

8. Clean Fruits and Vegetables

A better way to clean off dirt from fruits and vegetables is by using baking soda. Sprinkle a little amount of baking soda on a sponge, wipe then rinse.

9. Clean Grease and Oil Stains

Clean grease and oil stains by putting baking soda on the surface then brush it with wet brush.

10. Put Out Fires

Baking soda helps you extinguish fires like electrical kitchen fires or grease fires. All you have to do is throw a handful of baking soda at the base of the flame.

11. For Cold and Flu

Baking soda can also be used for medicinal purposes. Mix a baking soda and water it will help you ease headaches, cold and flu.

12. Deodorize Sinks And Trash Cans

Get rid of foul odors in your sink or trash can. Pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain while you run warm water. To deodorize your trash can, occasionally sprinkle some of the powder on the bottom of your trash can and in your trash.

13. Yeast and Fungal Cleaner

Fungal infections and yeast can be treated using baking soda. Simply dust or pat powder on the affected area.

14. Use It For Making A Rehydration Drink

In a survival or emergency situation, it is not uncommon to find yourself dehydrated. Mix baking soda with water, salt and a little sugar to keep yourself hydrated. Usual symptoms of dehydration include muscle weakness, sleepiness and stress.

15. Sunburn Relief

Mix baking soda with water and spray the mixture on the burned area. This will take the sting away and cool the skin.

Good post.....it's inexpensive and I use baking soda for all the reasons you mentioned.

You can also use it in laundry too it helps to clean your clothes and add it to your shampoo to keep from having shampoo build up on your hair too!

Excellent information, I'll print it off (bookmarking isn't working well for me now).

I already use it with soap in the laundry. I have sensitive skin, so it is good to put some baking soda in the wash water, and then, by itself without soap, in the rinse cycle. If I don't do it, the clothes are more scratchy.
