The woman is Jerusalem, and since it's new covenant prophecy it's spiritually discerned; so the woman at Rev 12 is spiritual Jerualem aka the teachers in the church. Prior to the coming of the devil and his angels, the woman gives birth to the elect, the "remnant of her seed" which is of course the same remnant we're always seeing in scripture

Re 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

John's retelling Ezekiel 16 here, so we begin with a "lovely woman" adorned with the Lord's clothing and such; the birth of the elect (144,000) occurs, they come out of the woman; the woman herself is then taken into the wilderness: this is meaning the "dead church" at this point, as now the elect have come out, so the spirit is gone from the body; she is taken into the wilderness to be tested, and this is the "hour of temptation"- people tend to think this is good but it is quite the opposite, she is tested and absolutely fails, and we will see this woman in the wilderness again before the Revelation concludes.

Now at this point, once the King of Babylon comes and the dead church is tested by his appearing, and they fail terribly (and how great the fall of that house); meanwhile the living church, in the form of the elect remnant, the 144,000; prepare to gather against Babylon, which is now guilty of the slain of spiritual Israel:

Jer 51:49 As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth.

so now let's go back to the wilderness again and see if we find our woman from Rev 12:

Re 17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

Oh no! What has happened to her?!

Eze 16:14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.
15 But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.

32 But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband!

oh, looks like someone took strangers instead of her husband.

2Cor 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

So then the dead church is destroyed by fire:

Eze 16:35 Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD:

Rev 17:16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the *****,

37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.

and shall make her desolate and naked,

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear;

38 And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy.
39 they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.
40 They shall also bring up a company against thee,

and burn her with fire.

41 And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more.
