NASA stunned to find unusual asteroid with six comet tails

November 8, 2013 – SPACE - Astronomers viewing our solar system’s asteroid belt with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have seen for the first time an asteroid with six comet-like tails of dust radiating from it like spokes on a wheel. Unlike all other known asteroids, which appear simply as tiny points of light, this asteroid, designated P/2013 P5, resembles a rotating lawn sprinkler. Astronomers are puzzled over the asteroid’s unusual appearance. “We were literally dumbfounded when we saw it,” said lead investigator David Jewitt of the University of California at Los Angeles. “Even more amazing, its tail structures change dramatically in just 13 days as it belches out dust. That also caught us by surprise. It’s hard to believe we’re looking at an asteroid.” Jewitt leads a team whose research paper appears online in the Nov. 7 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. P/2013 P5 has been ejecting dust periodically for at least five months. Astronomers believe it is possible the asteroid’s rotation rate increased to the point where its surface started flying apart. They do not believe the tails are the result of an impact with another asteroid because they have not seen a large quantity of dust blasted into space all at once. Scientists using the Pan-STARRS survey telescope in Hawaii announced their discovery of the asteroid Aug. 27. P/2013 P5 appeared as an unusually fuzzy-looking object. The multiple tails were discovered when Hubble was used to take a more detailed image Sept. 10. When Hubble looked at the asteroid again Sept. 23, its appearance had totally changed. It looked as if the entire structure had swung around. “We were completely knocked out,” Jewitt said.

Careful modeling by team member Jessica Agarwal of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Lindau, Germany, showed that the tails could have been formed by a series of impulsive dust-ejection events. She calculated that dust-ejection events occurred April 15, July 18, July 24, Aug. 8, Aug. 26 and Sept. 4. Radiation pressure from the sun stretched the dust into streamers. Radiation pressure could have spun P/2013 P5 up. Jewitt said the spin rate could have increased enough that the asteroid’s weak gravity no longer could hold it together. If that happened, dust could slide toward the asteroid’s equator, shatter and fall off, and drift into space to make a tail. So far, only about 100 to 1,000 tons of dust, a small fraction of the P/2013 P5′s main mass, has been lost. The asteroid’s nucleus, which measures 1,400 feet wide, is thousands of times more massive than the observed amount of ejected dust. Astronomers will continue observing P/2013 P5 to see whether the dust leaves the asteroid in the equatorial plane. If it does, this would be strong evidence for a rotational breakup. Astronomers will also try to measure the asteroid’s true spin rate. Jewitt’s interpretation implies that rotational breakup must be a common phenomenon in the asteroid belt; it may even be the main way small asteroids die. “In astronomy, where you find one, you eventually find a whole bunch more,” Jewitt said. “This is just an amazing object to us, and almost certainly the first of many more to come.” Jewitt said it appears P/2013 P5 is a fragment of a larger asteroid that broke apart in a collision roughly 200 million years ago. There are many collision fragments in orbits similar to P/2013 P5′s. Meteorites from these bodies show evidence of having been heated to as much as 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. This means the asteroid likely is composed of metamorphic rocks and does not hold any ice as a comet does. -NASA

Awakening? Nicaragua’s Momotombo volcano shaken by 300 quakes in one day- volcano hasn’t erupted in 108 years

November 8, 2013 – NICARAGUA – A seismic swarm in the Momotombo volcano in August claimed nearly 300 microearthquakes in a single day, more than twice as common tremors reported the same month, reported the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INET). According to the Monthly Bulletin of Earthquakes and Volcanoes of INET, the Momotombo swarm of microearthquakes caused 284 on August 17. The Momotombo, located north of Lake Managua, presented 524 microearthquakes between 16 and 18 August, according to the report. The microearthquakes are earthquakes with magnitudes less than the magnitude of 1.0 on the Richter scale, which are not perceived by the population. The swarm in August Momotombo volcano did not cause any damage in Nicaragua. Regarding the normal seismic activity, the INET recorded 177 tremors with a magnitude of 1.0 Richter or more, both on the Pacific Ocean, and in the volcanic chain and northern Nicaragua. The tremors under the Pacific Ocean were located off the coast of Corinto , Masachapa and The Small mouth, in the subduction zone, ie at the point of collision of continental plates Cocos and Caribbean, according to the report. The earthquakes in the volcanic chain were located in San Cristobal volcano, Masaya and Concepcion. The northern tremors occurred in the provinces of Estelí, Madriz, Nueva Segovia and the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN). Africa’s Western black rhino officially declared extinct

November 8, 2013 – AFRICA - Africa’s western black rhino is now officially extinct according the latest review of animals and plants by the world’s largest conservation network. The subspecies of the black rhino — which is classified as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species — was last seen in western Africa in 2006. The IUCN warns that other rhinos could follow saying Africa’s northern white rhino is “teetering on the brink of extinction” while Asia’s Javan rhino is “making its last stand” due to continued poaching and lack of conservation. “In the case of the western black rhino and the northern white rhino the situation could have had very different results if the suggested conservation measures had been implemented,” Simon Stuart, chair of the IUCN species survival commission said in a statement. This update offers both good and bad news on the status of many species around the world. “These measures must be strengthened now, specifically managing habitats in order to improve performance, preventing other rhinos from fading into extinction,” Stuart added. The IUCN points to conservation efforts which have paid off for the southern white rhino subspecies which have seen populations rise from less than 100 at the end of the 19th century to an estimated wild population of 20,000 today. -CNN

Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of strongest storms ever, heads for central Philippines

November 7, 2013 – PHILIPPINES – Thousands of people in vulnerable areas of the Philippines are being relocated as the strongest storm on the planet so far this year spins toward the country. With sustained winds of 305 kph (190 mph) and gusts as strong as 370 kph (230 mph), Super Typhoon Haiyan was churning across the Western Pacific toward the central Philippines as one of the most intense tropical cyclones ever recorded. Its wind strength makes it equivalent to an exceptionally strong Category 5 hurricane. The storm, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, is expected to still be a super typhoon, with winds in excess of 240 kph (149 mph), when it makes landfall Friday morning in the region of Eastern Visayas. The storm is so large in diameter that clouds from it are affecting two-thirds of the country. Authorities in the region had moved more than 3,800 people to evacuation centers by late Thursday, Maj. Reynaldo Balido of the Philippine Office of Civil Defense said. Most of those relocated live in Tacloban City, which sits on the coast of the island of Leyte and has a population of more than 200,000. In a speech Thursday, President Benigno S. Aquino III warned residents of the “calamity our countrymen will face in these coming days. Let me repeat myself: This is a very real danger, and we can mitigate and lessen its effects if we use the information available to prepare,” he said.

The government has three C-130 cargo aircraft ready to respond, as well as 32 planes and helicopters from the air force, the president said. Officials have placed relief supplies in the areas that are expected to get hit, Aquino said. “The effects of this storm can be eased through solidarity,” he said. As it moves across heavily populated areas of the central Philippines, Haiyan’s high winds and torrential rain are expected to affect millions of people. The storm system had a diameter of about 800 kilometers (500 miles) as of early Thursday afternoon. The Philippine weather agency, Pagasa, warned more than 30 provinces across the country Thursday to be prepared for possible flash floods and landslides. Schools in many areas canceled classes, emergency services were put on high alert, and airlines canceled flights. Some of the most vulnerable people are those living in makeshift shelters on the central Philippine island of Bohol. Last month, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the island, which lies close to the typhoon’s predicted path. The quake killed at least 222 people, injured nearly 1,000 and displaced around 350,000, according to authorities. -CNN



Philippine president asks for prayer: Philippine President Benigno Aquino III called for prayers Thursday night as a super typhoon barreled toward the Southeast Asian country, threatening to be more powerful than a storm last December that killed 1,146 people. “As always, no storm can bring down a united Filipino people to its knees,” President Aquino said in a nationally televised speech. “The effects of this storm can be eased through solidarity. Let us exhibit calm, especially as we buy our primary necessities, and as we evacuate to safer areas,” he added. Weather forecasters predicted that Typhoon Haiyan could pack winds of 215 kilometers per hour—powerful enough to spawn storm surges, topple houses and uproot trees—and deliver heavy rains that could overwhelm rivers and cause flash floods and landslides. The Japanese Meteorological Agency classifies Haiyan’s intensity as violent and forecasts central winds hitting 232 kilometers per hour by the time it makes landfall early Friday. The typhoon was coming just weeks after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit the country’s central area, killing 222 people and destroying historic churches, bridges and roads. The typhoon was expected to pass near the earthquake-ravages areas, raising particular alarm for quake victims still living in shelters. They were moved on Thursday to areas expected to be safer. The storm was forecast to hammer the country’s eastern seaboard. On Thursday, it was moving westward at 33 kilometers per hour, with a diameter of 600 kilometers. -WSJ

November 7, 2013 – INDONESIA – Mount Sinabung in Indonesia has erupted for the third time in as many months, spewing ash over 4 miles into the air and covering nearby villages in gray powder. The volcanic activity began on Sunday and more than 1200 people have been evacuated so far. The volcano surprised scientists in 2010 when it rumbled back to life after being dormant for centuries. Sinabung is one of 120 active volcanoes in the country which is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” –NBC

New explosions spotted at snowy Russian volcano

November 7, 2013 – KAMCHATKA – A remote Russian volcano may be readying for a new eruption, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory. On Nov. 5, NASA’s Earth-Observing 1 satellite spotted ash above the 9,702-foot-tall (2,958 meters) Zhupanovksy volcano, which recently woke from a decades-long slumber. The snowy peaks also shows signs of phreatic explosions — the stupendous blasts that result from hot lava meeting snow, ice or water, the Earth Observatory reported. Zhupanovksy’s latest activity started on Oct. 23, when the volcano spewed ash 16,400 feet (5 kilometers) into the sky. It was the first explosive eruption at the volcano since 1959, according to KVERT, the Kamchatka Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, which monitors volcanic and earthquake hazards in the Russian peninsula. The initial blast of ash and volcanic gases was followed by several days of phreatic bursts and strong gas emissions from fumaroles (gas vents) at the peak, KVERT reported. –Live Science

X3-Class solar flare produces rare ‘Magnetic Crochet’ on Earth

November 7, 2013 – SPACE - Solar flare causes rare ‘MAGNETIC CROCHET’: On Nov. 5th at 22:12 UT, the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR1890 erupted, producing a brief but intense X3-class solar flare. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash: Radiation from the flare caused a surge in the ionization of Earth’s upper atmosphere–and this led to a rare magnetic crochet. Alexander Avtanski observed the effect using a homemade magnetometer in San Jose, California. A magnetic crochet is a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field caused by electrical currents flowing in air 60 km to 100 km above our heads. Unlike geomagnetic disturbances that arrive with CMEs days after a flare, a magnetic crochet occurs while the flare is in progress. They tend to occur during fast impulsive flares like this one. –Space Weather
