SONS OF JACOB....OR SONS OF ISRAEL?


FOR FAIR USE AND EDUCATION AND DISCUSSION PURPOSES



Today, I was reading about Jacob's name being changed to "Israel" while he was passing over the "ford Jabbok"....Genesis 32:22.

And the rest of that verse hit me in my heart like a "spiritual dagger".....

Did this mean what I saw it meant? See if you see it as well:

"And he (Jacob) rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his ELEVEN SONS, and passed over the ford Jabbok."

JACOB was renamed "Israel" AFTER THE BIRTH OF ELEVEN OF HIS SONS. If these eleven (11) sons were born to JACOB....then they are the "sons of Jacob" or "the tribes of Jacob". Up to this point, THERE WAS NO "ISRAEL" because Jacob had not yet been given the name of "Israel".

For example:

If Mr. Jacob had eleven sons, their name would be "Jacob".

If Mr. Jacob had his name changed to "Mr. Israel," then any sons born AFTER his name change would be "Israel" as well. But NOT SO for those born BEFORE his name change....unless they had it LEGALLY changed to be the same as their father's name after it was changed.


Up to the time at the ford Jabbok, the sons of Jacob were the "tribes of Jacob".

LATER, after Jacob was told that his name would no longer be called "Jacob", but "Israel", BY GOD, HIMSELF....Genesis 35:10....then Rachael bore Israel's son BENJAMIN...Genesis 35:18....and Rachael died.

According to these verses, there are 12 tribes from Jacob....but only ONE tribe can LEGALLY be called "Israel"...and those are the sons of Benjamin.

Jesus Christ came from the tribe of Judah...who came from Jacob. But Judah could not be LEGALLY called "Israel" any more than the "Jews" today can be called "Israel"....because Judah was never, technically, a "tribe of Israel"....only BENJAMIN was.

Every word in the Bible tells us a truth. And this one is very revealing!! Especially for those who call (Judah) "Jews" by the name of "Israel", when they are legally NOT "Israel" at all...they are "sons of Jacob".
