Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is turning to the United Nations today to recognize the Palestinian Authority as a nonmember state, a historic move that may have wide-reaching implications. Though Israel and the US vociferously oppose the move, it is expected to pass by a wide margin.

An Iranian trade delegation from the Northern Semnan province's Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Mine departed on Wednesday for Istanbul to expand the province's economic cooperation and trade with Turkey. -Trade between Turkey and Iran has risen sharply over the past decade.

Astronomers have discovered what may be the most massive black hole ever known in a small galaxy about 250 million light-years from Earth, scientists say. The supermassive black hole has a mass equivalent to 17 billion suns and is located inside the galaxy NGC 1277 in the constellation Perseus.

Iraq bombings kill 45
Bombs mainly targeting Shiite Muslims and security forces in Iraq killed 45 people and wounded 205 others on Thursday in the deadliest day of violence to hit the country in more than two months. The attacks, the worst since 76 people were killed on September 9, included the second series of bombings against Shiites this week, after three car bombs exploded near their places of worship in Baghdad on Tuesday, killing a dozen and wounding scores more.

Moscow records heaviest November snow for 50 years
Moscow has recorded its heaviest November snowfall for half a century with a 24-hour snowstorm that has blanketed the city in more than four inches of cover.-"I was speaking with the forecasters, and it's been more than 50 years since Moscow's seen something like this," said Deputy Mayor Pyotr Biryukov on a television interview.

Biometric database launched amid opposition, hacking fears
The Knesset approved the launch of a national biometric identification system on Wednesday, which will be tested at the beginning of 2013. The decision to begin using the system was made by a joint committee comprising the Science and Technology Committee, Internal Affairs and Environment Committee and Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.

China is considering changes to its one-child policy to allow couples living in cities to have two children, in what may become new President Xi Jinping's first major reform since taking power. ...Demographers have warned that the one-child policy has led to a rapidly ageing population that could hamper China's economic competitiveness in the long run.

Splits emerge on Palestinian vote
BRITAIN has threatened to abstain from a vote for enhanced Palestinian status at the United Nations unless the Palestinians commit to fresh talks with Israel, highlighting European divisions on the vote. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that in order to secure Britain's vote at the UN General Assembly in New York, the Palestinians would have to unconditionally agree to negotiations on a lasting two-state deal with Israel.

EU rejects French report linking GM maize to cancer
The EU's food safety agency definitively rejected Wednesday a bombshell French report linking genetically modified corn to cancer... "Serious defects in the design and methodology of a paper by Seralini et al. mean it does not meet acceptable scientific standards,"... "Consequently it is not possible to draw valid conclusions about the occurrence of tumours in the rats tested," the agency said.

Egypt crisis: Assembly rushes to finish constitution
The assembly writing a new Egyptian constitution says it hopes to vote on a draft version as early as Thursday. The news came as the constitutional court indicated it would rule on Sunday whether to dissolve the assembly. The assembly is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists who back President Mohammed Morsi. It is being boycotted by other members.

EU commission foresees two treaty changes to reach full integration
The EU commission Wednesday published its vision for a "genuine" economic and monetary union (EMU) under which national budgets could be vetoed and a central European budget would allow transfers for troubled countries. The process would require two rounds of treaty change – one within the next five years and another more profound exercise in the longer-term.

Netanyahu: UN can't force Israel to compromise on security
With Israel facing a stinging diplomatic defeat Thursday at the UN, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that regardless of how many vote against Israel, "no force in the world will get me to compromise on Israel's security." He also said no force in the world can sever the thousands-year-old tie between the Jewish people and the land of Israel.

Russian president to attend Cooperation Council in Turkey
Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to visit Turkey on Dec. 3 to participate in the third meeting of the Russian-Turkish Cooperation Council, the Kremlin reported today, RIA Novosti reported.-The parties will also exchange the views on key international and regional issues, particularly the situation in the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Balkans.

Nato chief slams Russia over Turkey's Patriot request
Russia has no right to meddle in Turkey's deployment of Patriot missiles, Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says. Rasmussen has said the Patriot missiles to be deployed on the Turkish-Syrian border to counter threats from Syria will be under Nato control, Today's Zaman reports.

ECB lawyers say yes to single banking system
European Central Bank lawyers have today said that a single bank supervisory system can be set up without changes to European Union treaties.-The leaders of EU member states agreed at their summit on 28-29 June that the ECB should supervise all of the eurozone's 6,000 banks and urged the European Parliament and Council of Ministers to fast-track the necessary legislation so that the new system could start being implemented on 1 January.

Muslims Claim Netanyahu Plans to Build ‘False’ Holy Temple
Al Aqsa officials warn that the “new Likud” is planning to build a “false” Third Holy Temple and divide the Muslim compound. Muslim paranoia of Jews on the Temple Mount had reached panic stages even before this week’s Likud primaries that placed Jewish Leadership faction leader Moshe Feiglin in a ranking that assures his election to the Knesset in January. Is this scandal really just Fox News hype?
In September, WND also broke the story that assassinated Ambassador Christopher Stevens himself played a central role in recruiting jihadists to fight Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, according to Egyptian security officials. Now Middle Eastern security sources have further described both the U.S. mission and nearby CIA annex in Benghazi as the main intelligence and planning center for U.S. aid to the rebels that was being coordinated with Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Anger as Hungary far-right leader demands lists of Jews
A Hungarian far-right politician urged the government to draw up lists of Jews who pose a "national security risk", stirring outrage among Jewish leaders who saw echoes of fascist policies that led to the Holocaust. Marton Gyongyosi, a leader of Hungary's third-strongest political party Jobbik, said the list was necessary because of heightened tensions following the brief conflict in Gaza and should include members of parliament.

Higgs confident CERN particle is one he forecast in 1960s
Peter Higgs, whose eponymous "Higgs boson" is the long-sought target of the $10 billion Large Hadron collider in Switzerland, told reporters on Tuesday he was sure a particle detected last July was one he had predicted in 1964. "I think it will turn out to be (the Higgs boson), but it's just a question of getting out the additional information."

Saudi diplomat shot dead in Yemen capital Sanaa
A Saudi diplomat and his bodyguard have been shot dead in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, officials say. Gunmen opened fire on the diplomat's car, causing it to flip over, security officials said. The gunmen were said to have been dressed as members of the security services.

Syria conflict: Twin bomb blasts shake Damascus suburb
At least 34 people have been killed and many injured by two car bomb explosions in a south-eastern district of Syria's capital, Damascus, state media report. State television said "terrorists" were behind the blasts in Jaramana and broadcast pictures showing several charred vehicles and damaged buildings. The district is predominantly Druze and Christian, two communities which have so far not joined the uprising.

Egypt crisis: Protesters maintain Mursi decree defiance
Egyptian protesters have vowed to continue defying President Mohammed Mursi's wide-ranging new powers. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated across the country on Tuesday, in one of the largest protests since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. Mr Mursi has said the decree will be limited in scope, but has refused continuing demands to overturn it.

Turkey's Erdogan plans to visit Gaza with Mashaal next week
The Turkish prime minister has expressed willingness to visit Gaza several times in the past. Earlier this month, Erdogan told reporters he plans to visit Gaza soon, and that Turkish officials are conducting talks with officials in the Strip in order to make the trip happen, according to Today’s Zaman.

Strong earthquake shakes eastern Indonesia; no immediate damage reported
A strong earthquake struck the eastern part of Indonesia on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of damage. The magnitude-5.5 quake was centered 56 kilometers (35 miles) under the sea, the U.S. agency reported.

Missile wars: Israel's race against time
The Israelis' race to set up a credible air defense shield against missiles and rockets -- the weapons of choice for most of the country's adversaries -- is linked to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's threat to launch pre-emptive strikes against Iran's nuclear infrastructure.
