Ranchers, farmers brace for 'death tax' impact

Syrian rebels 'capture airport'
Syrian rebels say they have captured an airport near the border with Iraq. The airport of Hamdan in Deir al-Zour province, near the town of Albu Kamal, had been converted by government forces for military use. The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, an activist network, said rebels now controlled "large swathes of land".

Fiscal cliff: Optimism between Obama and Congress leaders
The US president and Congressional leaders have voiced optimism over resolving the fiscal cliff of tax rises and spending cuts at the end of 2012. Barack Obama met with leaders at the White House, with Republicans sounding more inclined to back higher taxes in some form. "I feel confident that a solution may be in sight," said House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.

Palestinian Authority warns of chaos in West Bank
The Palestinian Authority warned Saturday of “chaos” in the West Bank in response to the ongoing IDF operation in the Gaza Strip...Palestinians staged demonstrations in various parts of the West Bank...Many protesters carried Hamas’s green flags and chanted slogans calling on the Islamic movement’s armed wing, Izzadin Kassam Brigades, to “destroy Tel Aviv.”

Hamas warns it will renew suicide attacks
Hamas's armed wing on Saturday night released a Hebrew-language video warning that it would renew its deadly suicide bombing campaign in Israel. Introduced with a message "from the Palestinian nation to the Zionists," the Izzadin Kassam Brigades video stated "We have missed the suicide [bombs]... wait for us soon in stores, buses and cafes."

Rockets from Gaza hit Beersheba, Ashkelon, Ashdod
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip fired over 30 rockets towards a number of Israeli cities Sunday morning, striking among others, Beersheba, Ashdod, Ashkelon and Sderot. The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted two rockets fired toward Tel Aviv and the IAF struck over 70 targets in Gaza in the same time period.

Netanyahu may delay election due to Gaza op
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu may consider postponing next Sunday’s Likud primary, and possibly even the January 22 general election, if Operation Pillar of Defense in the Gaza Strip does not end soon, Likud sources said on Saturday night.

Netanyahu: IDF prepared to widen Gaza operation
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday morning said that the IDF is prepared to widen its military operation in Gaza if necessary, Israel Radio reported. Netanyahu confirmed the IAF has struck more than 1,000 targets in Gaza since the beginning of Operation Pillar of Defense on Wednesday.

French protests against gay marriage bill
Tens of thousands of people have protested in France against plans to legalise same-sex marriage and allow gay couples to adopt. Police said at least 70,000 took to the streets in Paris; there were other demonstrations in the cities of Lyon, Toulouse and Marseille.

Iran denies supplying Fajr 5 rockets to Gaza
A senior Iranian official has denied his country supplied the Fajr 5 missiles which Palestinian militants have been firing at Tel Aviv, Iran's Al-Alam television reported on Saturday. "We deny having delivered the Fajr 5 to the Palestinian resistance. The aim of such accusations is to portray the resistance as weak whereas it is perfectly capable of producing the arms it needs," said Allaeddine Boroujerdi, head of parliament's foreign affairs committee.

Syria slams 'hostile' French offer to host coalition envoy
Damascus deems hostile a decision by France to host an ambassador from the newly formed Syrian opposition National Coalition, a Syrian minister said in key regional ally Iran on Sunday. "France is acting like a hostile nation," Ali Haidar, minister for national reconciliation, told AFP.

Israel attacks Hamas media operations in Gaza
The Israeli military widened its range of targets in the Gaza Strip on Sunday to include the media operations of the Palestinian territory's Hamas rulers, sending its aircraft to attack two buildings used by both Hamas and foreign media outlets.

Israel returns fire on Syrian Golan, may have caused deaths
Israel fired artillery into Syria in response to gunfire aimed at its troops in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, and may have killed Syrian soldiers, Israel's army said on Sunday. There were no reported injuries on the Israeli side from the shootings, which occurred on Saturday, the third case this month of violence seen as a spillover of civil unrest in Syria that has also alarmed other neighbors such as Lebanon and Turkey.

San Diego citizens could soon face prison sentences for washing their cars using city water

Report: Rockets Fired from Egypt Hit Israel
Two major Israeli newspapers are reporting that rockets fired from Egypt have hit Israel. "Terrorists in the Sinai Peninsula launched rockets into Israel Friday night," reports the Jerusalem Post. "The rockets fell near an Israeli village on the southern border, causing some damage, but no injuries."

Intel officials unable to say who changed CIA talking points on Libya, lawmaker says
Former CIA Director David Petraeus stoked the controversy over the Obama administration's handling of the Libya terror attack, testifying Friday that references to "Al Qaeda involvement" were stripped from his agency's original talking points -- while other intelligence officials were unable to say who changed the memo, according to a top lawmaker who was briefed.

Israel launches 180 airstrikes on Gaza overnight
As up to 75,000 Israeli reservists were mobilised for a possible ground invasion, war planes made overnight raids on a series of government buildings and security installations. Over 60 rockets pound Southern Israel as sirens wail

Iran Says The Muslim World Must Strike Back At Israel For Gaza Attacks
Islamic countries must close ranks and respond to Israel's deadly attacks on the Gaza Strip, Iran's Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday. "Putting an end to the Zionist (Israeli) regime's crimes is only possible through a united, revolutionary retaliation by the Muslim world," Vahidi said in remarks carried by the official IRNA news agency.

Iran ready to double uranium enrichment at Fordo - IAEA
Iran is ready to double the output at its underground uranium enrichment facility, the UN nuclear watchdog says. A leaked report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there were 2,784 centrifuges at Fordo, and that Iran could soon double the number operating from 700 to 1,400.
