Dear Esther,
I read in this week’s Nearing Midnight column that there is going to be a new advice section. I have a question for you about my 15-year-old son. He is usually a very good kid but lately he is getting somewhat rebellious and rude. We have provided a very nice home for him. My husband and I have taught him biblical principles since he was little but he now say he doesn’t care about “that stuff.” What do you think would be the best way to handle this situation?

Dear Frustrated Mom in Kansas,
The first thing that comes to mind from reading your letter is Proverbs 22.6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” I am sure you are aware of that Scripture. Rest assured God has His hand on your son. It is common at his age to get mouthy and see how much control teens can get away with. Sometimes, even when we do our best to teach Godly principles to our children difficulties such as your situation can flare-up.
The first place to start is through prayer. Our tendency when problems arise is to want fix the situation all on our own. God already knows the best solution to your problem. Trust Him completely. Give the entire situation over to the Lord and at the same time do not show any weakness in dealing with your son. Tell him in a loving but firm way together with your husband, if possible, that if he continues to act disrespectfully that nothing good will come out of the situation for him.
I would suggest that you ask him to write down all the blessings he has including the cost of all his hobbies, phone, computer(s), nice home, schooling, clothes, creature comforts, food, etc. Then point out to him that all those blessings are provided to him by God through the hard work of his parents. Ask him if he would like to forfeit all those blessings and fend for himself since he is so unyielding
You might remind him there are plenty of other kids that would love to have a room like his and all the benefits he gets each day. This would be a good time to teach him again about having an attitude of gratitude. And as long as he is living under your roof that he is not in charge.
Of course another culprit in the situation could very well be the “friends” he associates with. Perhaps you could make your home the place where he can bring his friends to regularly and in that way he might choose more carefully who he spends his time with. By all means get him involved in a church youth group or better yet, start one at your house. Make your home the place where other kids want to come and hangout.
Look him straight in the eye and tell him you love him very much and that it is very painful for you to see him acting this way. Ask him, “Whom can you count on when you are sick? Who can you count on when you need something? Who has done everything for you?”
Hopefully he will soon realize that without God in his life and the love and devotion of his parents that his future will be difficult and that his selfish, rude behavior will not get him ahead. And be sure to monitor the videos and TV he watches, and point out o him that the world’s ways are to control him and that he is too smart to get caught up in mass conditioning and waste his time watching programs filled with morally corrupt messages that only serve to harm him emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
Remind him that God loves him and has a plan for his life that is far better than anything TV shows or questionable friends might suggest. Even though your son says he doesn’t care about “that stuff” you can be sure all the good biblical teaching you have given him over the years is still alive inside him. When you have the right opportunity share these Scriptures with your son:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:11-13).
“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:5-7)
I will be praying for your son and your entire family. May the Lord’s peace that surpasses all understanding guide and comfort you.
