South Florida on alert as Tropical Storm Isaac exits Haiti, killing 3

August 25, 2012 – PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – At least three people died in Haiti as Tropical Storm Isaac triggered mudslides and flooding there before heading back over water and towards Cuba. Isaac should become a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday just as it nears the Florida Keys, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, and then grow into an even stronger Category 2 storm. “Hurricane conditions are expected in the hurricane warning area in southwest Florida and the Florida Keys on Sunday,” the center said in a Saturday morning advisory. Gov. Rick Scott on Saturday declared a state of emergency to make sure local and state agencies would be ready. The center now expects Isaac to build to a Category 2 hurricane, with winds up to 110 mph, after it enters the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Isaac is a massive storm, with tropical storm-force winds extending 230 miles from the center. Key West International Airport was halting all flights at 7 p.m. Saturday until the storm had passed. In Haiti, a woman and a child in the town of Souvenance were killed in the storm, a local official reported. In the capital Port-au-Prince — where some 350,000 people are still living in tents or shelters after the 2010 Haiti earthquake — a girl, 10, was killed when a wall fell on her. Power outages and flooding were reported as Isaac moved across the hilly and severely deforested Caribbean country. “There’s a lot of rain, a lot of wind,” said Magdala Jean-Baptiste, who huddled with her frightened children in their home in the southern coastal city of Jacmel. “We haven’t had any power since the storm started yesterday. We passed the night with no sleep.” In neighboring Dominican Republic, Isaac felled power and phone lines and left at least a dozen towns cut off by flood waters. The most severe damage was reported along the south coast, including the capital Santo Domingo, where more than half the city was without power. Cuba prepared by closing beaches and evacuating tourists in vulnerable areas, NBC’s Mary Murray and The Weather Channel’s Mike Seidel reported from Havana. Flights across Cuba were also suspended. -NBC

Haitians are preparing for the arrival of tropical storm Isaac. The deforested mountains around the capital, Port-au-Prince, make it vulnerable to flash flooding. Economic crisis: riots, food raids, and the collapse of Spain



August 25, 2012 – SPAIN – In the small Spanish town of Marinaleda, located in the southern region of Andalusía, Mayor Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo has an answer for the country’s economic crisis and the hunger that comes with it: He organized and led the town’s residents to raid supermarkets to get the food necessary to survive. Seven people have been arrested in two raids in which trade unionists loaded shopping carts full of food and left without paying, with the support of the townspeople cheering them on and the mayor watching with approval. (reuters.com, Aug. 15) Gordillo, 60, is a leftist and a member of the Izquierda Unida political party. He sports a Palestinian kaffiyeh scarf around his neck and a Fidel Castro-like beard. Gordilla says he wants to draw attention to the plight of the common worker in Spain, a country in which the economic collapse has hit particularly hard and millions are suffering. (europeonline-magazine.eu, Aug. 14) Since 2007, poverty in Spain has risen 15 percent, while unemployment hovers around 25 percent and tens of thousands have lost their homes to bank foreclosures. The conservative national government has only made matters worse, by introducing austerity measures that have worsened the workers’ lives, while bailing out the bankers and capitalists who caused the crisis in the first place. Gordillo plans to lead a march from Jódar, one of the cities most affected by the current economic meltdown, to other Spanish towns, to try to convince other officials to fight back against the ruling class’s demands of cutbacks and increased hardship for the workers. He is fighting dismantlement of state social services, bank payoffs, and the throwing of the common Spaniard under the bus to the benefit of those exploiting them. Gordillo hopes he can convince other mayors to stage a real resistance to the government’s demands. –Workers World

Spanish "Robin Hood" Mayor Loots Supermarket
A Spanish mayor who became a cult hero for staging robberies at supermarkets and giving stolen groceries to the poor set off on a three-week march on Thursday that could embarrass the government and energise anti-austerity campaigners.

"We will occupy banks because they are responsible for this crisis and some of them (bankers) should be in jail. The attorney general should intervene as well as Mrs Becerril (the ombudsman), but that is unlikely."

Seven people have been arrested for taking part in the two raids, in which labour unionists, cheered on by supporters, piled food into supermarket carts and walked out without paying.

Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo, regional lawmaker and mayor of Marinaleda, stood outside the supermarket.

Gordillo,who has been referred to as a Spanish Robin Hood, has political immunity as an elected member of Andalusia's regional parliament, but says he would be happy to renounce it and be arrested himself.

His critics, however say he cannot go breaking the law like Robin Hood and at the same time be the Sheriff of Nottingham, in reference to his public post.

On Thursday, Gordillo and about 500 labourers supporting his cause began a trek from Jodar, the town with Andalusia's highest unemployment rate, planning to march across the region in blistering summer heat to persuade other local leaders to refuse to comply with government reforms designed to cut spending.

Sanchez Gordillo says he wants to draw attention to the human face of Spain's economic situation - poverty levels have risen by over 15 percent since 2007, a quarter of workers are jobless and tens of thousands have been evicted from their homes.

Indonesia’s Tangkubanperahu volcano awakens from dormant sleep after 20 years: alert level raised



August 25, 2012 – INDONESIA – An increase in seismic activity at Tangkubanperahu volcano near Bandung, the capital of West Java, has been detected since 13 August and promted the Indonesian Volcanological survey (PVMBG) to increase the alert level of the volcano from 1 (normal) to 2 (alert) on 23 August. Between 1 July and 23 Aug, 264 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, which is almost double to values measured during similar periods of time at the beginning of the year. In addition, pulses of volcanic tremor could be recognized. Tangkubanperahu has 2 main craters, each about 1000 m wide and 400 m deep, filled by crater lakes, Kawah Ratu (queen) and Kawah Upas, respectively. The craters and lakes along with fumaroles and warm springs are popular tourist destinations. It is recommended not to climb the volcano’s crater, which is a popular tourist destination in the area. Heavy torrential rain, landslides, and floods kill 26 in Pakistan




August 25, 2012 – PAKISTAN – Flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain have killed at least 26 people and destroyed hundreds of houses in northern Pakistan, officials said on Thursday. Chaudhry Abdul Majeed, the prime minister of Pakistan-administered Kashmir said at least 17 people have been killed and nine others injured in six districts since Monday. “Some 685 houses and 125 shops have been damaged and roads washed away,” Majeed said, adding that a request has been made to the federal government for financial help. Irshad Bhatti, a spokesman for the country’s National Disaster Management Authority, said the extent of the damage was still being assessed. The majority of the deaths in Kashmir came when buildings collapsed due to the rains, and a further nine people died in flooding in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said. Adnan Khan, an official from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said he feared the death toll there could rise. “Dozens of families have suffered and their houses were destroyed, several people are still missing,” Khan told AFP. Weather officials are predicting heavy rain in the next three days and rescue teams are closely monitoring the situation, Bhatti said. Floods in Pakistan in the summer of 2011 affected 5.8 million people, with floodwaters killing livestock, destroying crops, homes and infrastructure as the nation struggled to recover from record inundations the previous year. -TD

Bosnia on red alert during hottest summer on record




August 25, 2012 – BOSNIA – Bosnian authorities put the entire country on red alert Thursday against a heat wave that has seen the Balkan nation bake in its hottest summer on record, the national weather institute said. Meteorologist Dzenan Zulum said the months of June, July and August had been the hottest since measurements were first recorded 120 years ago. In some places, the mercury has soared to 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 Fahrenheit) and temperatures in the capital Sarajevo have in recent days been about seven degrees Celsius warmer than normal. “We predict a similar temperature for the next two or three days followed by a slight cooling from Sunday,” Zulum said. Farmers say between 50-80 percent of their crops have been damaged in the heat wave, and water distribution to several towns has been disrupted. Bosnia is also battling dozens of forest fires in the south and east of the country, with many hundreds of hectares (acres) of land burned. –Terra Daily

August 25, 2012 – CHINA - One of the longest bridges in northern China collapsed on Friday, just nine months after it opened, setting off a storm of criticism from Chinese Internet users and underscoring questions about the quality of construction in the country’s rapid expansion of its infrastructure. A nearly 330-foot-long section of a ramp of the eight-lane Yangmingtan Bridge in the city of Harbin dropped 100 feet to the ground. Four trucks plummeted with it, resulting in three deaths and five injuries. The 9.6-mile bridge is one of three built over the Songhua River in that area in the past four years. China’s economic stimulus program in 2009 and 2010 helped the country avoid most of the effects of the global economic downturn, but involved incurring heavy debt to pay for the rapid construction of new bridges, highways and high-speed rail lines all over the country. Questions about the materials used during the construction and whether the projects were properly engineered have been the subject of national debate ever since a high-speed train plowed into the back of a stopped train on the same track on July 23 last year in the eastern city of Wenzhou. The crash killed 40 people and injured 191; a subsequent investigation blamed in particular flaws in the design of the signaling equipment. Photographs on Chinese Web sites on Friday appeared to show that the collapsed section of the Yangmingtan Bridge’s ramp had fallen on land, not in the river. According to the official Xinhua news agency, the Yangmingtan Bridge was the sixth major bridge in China to collapse since July 2011. Chinese officials have tended to blame overloaded trucks for the collapses, and did so again on Friday. Many in China have attributed the recent spate of bridge collapses to corruption, and online reaction to the latest collapse was scathing. “Corrupt officials who do not die just continue to cause disaster after disaster,” said one post on Friday on Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging service similar to Twitter. –NY Times

6.4 magnitude earthquake strikes seafloor of Molucca Sea near Indonesia

August 26, 2012 – INDONESIA – A deep 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the arc in the Molucca Sea, WNW of Tobela Indonesia. The earthquake registered at a depth of 69.7 km (43.3 miles) below the seafloor. The epicenter of the earthquake was 169 km (105 miles) NNW (340° from Ternate, Moluccas, Indonesia. A low tsunami reading was reported in the region of the Molucca Sea but no major warnings were issued. –The Extinction Protocol

Source of loud boom in California foothills a mystery

August 26, 2012 – CALIFORNIA - People from all over El Dorado County say they’re hearing loud booms several times a week, but there are many theories on what is causing them. “I thought it was thunder,” said one person. “It’s definitely not thunder; too consistent. I thought it was just mining,” said another person. “I always considered them to be sonic booms from flying aircrafts for years,” said Loring Brunius, owner of Sierra Rock Diamond Quarry. People who live near Pleasant Valley say their days have been interrupted by loud booms, shaking the floor beneath them. “You can feel it in the ground, no question about it. But no one’s been able to figure out why,” said Pleasant Valley resident Peter O’Grady. “I tend to hear somewhere between four to six of these things during the weekdays usually between 11 p.m. and 2 p.m. “Boom, boom, boom, boom just like that,” said Lorren Gonzales, who lives near Pleasant Valley. Some think the booms are from nearby wineries using propane cannons to scare away birds. “We’ve never done it and I don’t know of any other winery that does,” said Carrie Bendick, a winemaker at Holly’s Hill Winery. According to USGS, there aren’t enough seismic stations to pinpoint the exact location. Meanwhile, some say the booms have been around so long and happen so often they barely notice them anymore. Still, others want to solve the mystery. “I would like to know what it is, yeah. And I’d like to know when it’s going to stop too,” said O’Grady. CBS13 spoke to Fallon Naval Air Station that said any supersonic flight operations they do are only allowed over Dixie Valley, which is hundreds of miles away. Some think illegal mining could be the source of the sounds, but Brunius doubts that theory. He said if that was the case, the culprit would have been caught by now. –CBS

Massive Typhoon Bolaven slams Okinawa, Japan and heads for Koreas

August 26, 2012 – JAPAN - A massive typhoon began to make landfall Sunday over Okinawa, bringing winds more ferocious than even the typhoon-weary Japanese island has seen in decades. It will likely be the strongest since 1956, said CNN International meteorologist Tom Sater. With a cloud field of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), Typhoon Bolaven is 20 times larger than Okinawa’s length. “It’s been very, very severe,” said storm chaser James Reynolds, on the northwestern coast of the island. Tree branches were flying through the air amid torrential rain, he said. The infrastructure on Okinawa is designed to withstand violent storms. “Everything’s made of solid concrete,” said Reynolds. “Utility poles are so wide you couldn’t even put your arms around them,” Reynolds said. “All the houses are built with concrete. There’s no such thing as a beach house in Okinawa because it would just get destroyed by a typhoon.” Still, the power was out where he was Sunday. On Sunday evening, Bolaven was carrying sustained winds of 213 kilometers (132 miles) per hour, with gusts reaching 259 kilometers per hour (161 mph) — the highest since Typhoon Naha in 1956. Bolaven was traveling northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (9 mph). The storm is on course to hit China and the Korean peninsula. “It’s roughly the size of France to Poland in land mass,” said Sater. “The typhoon is producing wave heights of 16 meters high, so the possibility is there for a storm surge of 8 to 10 meters high on the coastline. Wind gusts will be strong enough to not only uproot or down trees and power lines, but could flip automobiles. Okinawa is 100 kilometers (62 miles) long. The size of Bolaven’s eye is roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) in width. This means many residents could experience the eye passing over them; unfortunately, that means putting up with the strongest winds the storm can produce, followed by a calm period with a brief clearing of the skies overhead, then another chaotic period of damaging winds that will be blowing in the opposite direction of the previous winds. Rainfall totals could top 500 mm (20 inches) in 24 hours,” said Sater. -CNN
