Israeli minister warns of 30-day war with Iran



August 16, 2012 – ISRAEL - A strike on Iran’s nuclear sites would spark a 30-day war with missile attacks on Israel’s cities and as many as 500 dead, according to the Israeli minister responsible for preparing home defenses. Matan Vilnai, who is stepping down as home front defense minister to become ambassador to China, said the country was “ready as never before.” “The assessments are for a war that will last 30 days on a number of fronts,” he told the Maariv newspaper. “It could be that there will be less fatalities, but it could be there will be more, that is the scenario that we are preparing for according to the best experts.” Speculation is growing that Israel is planning a unilateral attack on Iran’s nuclear program – or that it is using the question to increase pressure on Barack Obama to launch an American strike. Israel is convinced that archenemy Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons, dismissing Tehran’s claims that its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. Israel considers nuclear-armed Iran to be a mortal danger. Iran backs anti-Israel militants with funds and weapons, and its leaders often call for Israel’s destruction. In his latest pronouncement, Iranian Supreme leader Ali Khamenei said Israel will disappear from “the scene of geography.” Addressing war veterans in Tehran on Wednesday, he said Iran considers it its “religious duty to save this Islamic country (Palestine) from the clutches of the Zionist occupiers.” Israel’s leaders have indicated an attack is a possibility if they conclude the international community has failed to halt the Iranian nuclear program. Mr. Vilnai did not elaborate on how he reached his assessments, but his office relies on intelligence and other assessments about Iranian weapons capabilities and Israeli susceptibility. Defense Minister Ehud Barak has also said the Israeli death toll could be in the range of 500 in such a conflict. “Just as the citizens of Japan have to realize that they can have earthquakes, so the citizens of Israel have to realize that if they live here, they have to be prepared to expect missiles on the home front,” Vilnai said. “It’s not pleasant for the home front, but decisions have to be made, and we have to be ready” –Telegraph

Khamenei: Zionist regime will disappear from map



August 16, 2012 – ISRAEL - With the U.S. sending clear public signals to Israel that it is opposed to military action now against Iran, and a cacophonous debate on the matter in Israel, senior Iranian officials continue to threaten Israel with destruction. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that he was confidant “the fake Zionist (regime) will disappear from the landscape of geography,” Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported. Khamenei made the comments during a meeting with veterans of the Iran-Iraq War. “The light of hope will shine on the Palestinian issue, and this Islamic land will certainly be returned to the Palestinian nation,” Khamenei was quoted as saying. Earlier on Wednesday Brig.- Gen. Gholamreza Jalali, the head of Iran’s Passive (civil) Defense Organization and a former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, during a speech ahead of Al-Quds Day, an anti-Israel event initiated by Iran, said that in order to liberate Palestine there was no other option but to destroy Israel. [Al-“Quds Day] is a reflection of the fact that no other way exists apart from resolve and strength to completely eliminate the aggressive nature and to destroy Israel,” Jalali said, according to a report by Iran’s ISNA news agency. The report was also picked up by other news outlets including Mashregh News, which is affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards. Al-Quds Day is an annual Iranian anti-Zionist event established in 1979 by Ayatollah Khomeini and which falls this year on August 17. Iran also seeks to export the event to other Muslim countries. Jalali said that the message of Khomeini’s Al-Quds Day initiative was that the Muslim world must support the “oppressed people of Palestine” in a show of resistance against “the Zionist usurpers.” Jerusalem Post

Colorado hit with first anthrax disease outbreak in 31 years



August 16, 2012 – COLORADO – Two more cows have died from anthrax exposure in northeast Colorado, expanding the first outbreak of the disease in the state in 31 years to three ranches. Last week, 60 cows died on a Logan County ranch, where anthrax was positively identified in one animal. Officials say it’s likely they all died of the disease. The Colorado Department of Agriculture said Wednesday the additional cows were on two separate adjacent ranches. Both died from the disease. State Veterinarian Keith Roehr said all three ranches involved share fences and the new cases likely are the result of cows grazing in an area with soil containing anthrax spores. Neighboring herds have been vaccinated. No cows left the affected ranches so none entered the food supply and no human infection has been reported, Roehr said. Anthrax kills livestock within hours of infection and can decimate herds if animals are not quickly treated, he said. Anthrax is caused by a bacterium that forms in spores and can lie dormant in soil for decades until ingested. Humans get anthrax most commonly through direct contact with infected animals usually when spores get into a cut or abrasion on the skin. Without treatment it can be fatal, but early treatment with antibiotics is very effective. The personnel on the three affected ranches are working with their doctors and public health officials and are being given antibiotics as a precaution, Roehr said. –Business Week

62: Ivan Groznyy volcano erupts in Kuril Islands



August 16, 2012 – KURIL ISLANDS - The Ivan Groznyy (“Ivan the Terrible” volcano erupted early on Thursday morning on the island of Iturup, part of the Kuril group in Russia’s Far East. The volcano spewed a column of ash onto the surrounding area. Local people in the nearest towns, Goryachiye Klyuchi (9 kilometers away) and the city of Kurilsk (25 kilometers), noticed a faint smell of hydrogen sulfide gas, which disappeared later. The eruption poses no threat to nearby human settlements. Scientists recorded signs of the impending eruption on Wednesday, when gas emissions on the volcano’s northeast slope increased, a Sakhalin region Emergency Ministry representative told RIA Novosti. Observation of the volcano continues. –RIA Novosti

U.S. high velocity ‘scramjet’ engine fails in secondary flight test



August 16, 2012 – TECH – A flight test of an experimental unmanned vehicle designed to fly at hypersonic speeds has ended in failure, the US Air Force said Wednesday. The X-51A Waverider was dropped from a B-52 bomber Tuesday and launched by a rocket booster as planned but the flight was over in seconds after a control fin malfunctioned, the Air Force said in a statement. The faulty control fin meant that the vehicle’s flight ended before a specially-designed “Scramjet” engine could be ignited, it said. “It is unfortunate that a problem with this subsystem caused a termination before we could light the Scramjet engine,” said Charlie Brink, program manager for the project. “All our data showed we had created the right conditions for engine ignition and we were very hopeful to meet our test objectives,” he said. The test had called for a five-minute flight off the coast of southern California at Mach 6, six times the speed of sound or more than 7,300 kilometers (4,500 miles) per hour. –Discovery News
'Hypersonic' aircraft put to the test

The US Air Force planned a key test of an experimental aircraft designed to fly at six times the speed of sound, or about 6,500kph.

The unmanned X-51A WaveRider, the military's latest attempt at hypersonic flight, was expected to reach Mach 6 after it is dropped by a B-52 bomber and takes flight off the Southern California coast.

Engineers hoped the X-51A would sustain its top speed for five minutes, twice as long as it has gone before.

The X-51A WaveRider could become the basis for much faster commercial flights and a new tool for military use.

Eurozone shuttle diplomacy to pick up pace before critical month



August 16, 2012 – EUROPE – After a brief summer lull, euro zone leaders are gearing up for a round of shuttle diplomacy in the run-up to what could be a crucial month in the 2-1/2-year debt crisis. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will fly next week to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, according to Greek and German government officials. Earlier in the week, he will see Jean-Claude Juncker, who heads the group of euro zone finance ministers. Merkel and Hollande will meet next Thursday, a day before the Greek premier arrives in Berlin, German government sources said, and the round of talks will extend well beyond Greece. Merkel, now in Canada, will visit Spain’s Mariano Rajoy early in September, according to the Spanish premier, and Italy’s technocrat leader Mario Monti has said he would travel to Berlin before August is out. The flurry of activity presages a crucial period for the euro zone after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi bought a measure of calm by announcing he would do whatever it took to shore up the bloc, including tackling high Spanish and Italian borrowing costs. On September 6, the ECB may spell out at its monthly policy meeting exactly how it could intervene in the bond market if asked. Markets will be on red alert for ongoing signs of internal opposition after Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann made clear his reservations about the plan. Six days later, Germany’s constitutional court will deliver a ruling on the euro zone’s permanent ESM rescue fund before which Berlin cannot ratify it. Dutch elections are held on the same day. The expectation is that the court will not block the fund’s inception but it could demand greater political oversight. Draghi has said the ECB could only intervene to lower borrowing costs if a euro zone sovereign had first asked for similar help from the bloc’s bailout funds, to which conditions would be attached. On September 14/15, European Union finance ministers meet in Cyprus. By then, the troika of EU, IMF and ECB inspectors may have delivered a verdict on Greece’s debt-cutting progress. –Reuters

Canada refuses to help bailout Eurozone: The Conservative government on Wednesday rejected calls from Germany and the eurozone that Canada give to a bailout fund, even as German chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Ottawa for two days of meetings with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Mr. Harper and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty have repeatedly rejected entreaties from Europe to contribute to a $450-billion bailout pot, managed by the International Monetary Fund, for troubled eurozone economies. On Wednesday, just hours before Ms. Merkel’s flight landed in Ottawa, Mr. Flaherty said the debt and banking crisis in Europe is dragging some eurozone countries back into recession and he resisted calls for Canada to help. “Not only should the European countries take overwhelming concerted action to take control of the situation, but also that European countries themselves have more than adequate resources to do so,” Mr. Flaherty told reporters in Ottawa. “It’s not necessary for Canada to use Canadian resources to help solve the European problem, given that the European countries are among the wealthiest in the world.” Canada and the United States ended up being the only G20 countries not contributing to the eurozone bailout. Mr. Flaherty said the remedy for the eurozone “is very clear,” noting it must recapitalize banks and deal with the sovereign debt crisis. “We’ve known this for several years now, which makes it rather frustrating at the end of the day, quite frankly,” he added. –Calgary Herald

Are methane hydrates dissolving?

August 17, 2012 –ARCTIC CIRCLE - West of Spitsbergen methane gas is effervescing out of the seabed. Is this an indication that methane hydrates in the seabed are dissolving due to rising temperatures? And what would the effects be? An expedition with the German research vessel MARIA S. MERIAN and the submersible JAGO lead by GEOMAR | Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel hopes to help answer these questions. The expedition began this week in Reykjavik. The average temperatures of the atmosphere are rising; the average temperatures of the oceans, too. Not only living organisms react sensitively to these changes. The transitional zones between shallow shelf seas and the deep sea at continental slopes store a huge amount of methane hydrates in the sea bed. These specific, ice-like compounds only forms at low temperatures and under high pressure. When the water temperature directly above the sea bed rises, some of the methane hydrates could dissolve and release the previously bound methane. ‘This scenario incorporates two fears: Firstly that enormous amounts of this very powerful greenhouse gas will be released into the atmosphere, and secondly that the continental slopes may become unstable” explains the geophysicist Professor Christian Berndt from GEOMAR, Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. He is leading an expedition starting today on the German research vessel MARIA S. MERIAN which will analyse the sea off the western shore of Spitsbergen in order to find out whether the first methane hydrates in the sea bed are dissolving and what the consequences might be. The expedition builds on research conducted by marine scientists from Kiel who worked in this area of the sea in 2008. Back then they found over 250 places where gas was escaping the sea bed. “These spots lie directly on the border of the area of stable hydrates” explains Professor Berndt. “Therefore we presume that the hydrates are dissolving from the rim inwards.” During the upcoming expedition, the scientists from Kiel will be working together with colleagues from Bremen, Switzerland, Great Britain and Norway to discover whether the gas emanation shows signs of dissolved hydrates and whether this is due to warmer sea beds. –Terra Daily

August 17, 2012 – MONTREAL - Canada is one of many countries experiencing a significant decline in religiosity, according to a new report that found the number of people around the world who claim to be religious dropped 9% since 2005, while atheism rose 3%. More than 51,000 men and women in 57 countries were asked, “Irrespective of whether you attend a place of worship or not, would you say you are a religious person, not a religious person or a convinced atheist?” The Global Index of Religion and Atheism found 59% of respondents think of themselves as religious, 23% as not religious and 13% as convinced atheists. China has the largest population of atheists (47%). Ghana has the largest population of people who consider themselves religious (96%). Meanwhile, Ireland, once above average in religiosity but rocked by numerous child sex abuse scandals involving the Catholic church, had a drop in those claiming to be religious – from 69% to 47%. Only Vietnam saw a bigger decline, from 53% to 30%. Canada is ninth on the list, with a 12% drop. The study also found that religiosity declines when people prosper. “People in bottom income groups are 17% more religious than those in the top income groups. The richer you get, the less religious you define yourself,” according to the study. The study was conducted by WIN-Gallup International between November 2011 and January 2012, with a margin of error of 3-5 percentage points at 95% confidence level. -Toronto Sun
