US economy adds 163,000 new jobs
The US economy added an extra 163,000 jobs in July, according to official figures, beating analysts' forecasts. However, the unemployment rate rose from 8.2% to 8.3% last month, as more people re-entered the workforce but failed to find a job. The US Department of Labor also said 6,000 fewer jobs were created in May and June than first estimated.
Iran tests upgraded version of short-range missile
Iran claims it has successfully test-fired an upgraded version of a short-range ballistic missile. Iranian Defense Minister Genenral Ahmad Vahidi says the solid-fueled Fateh-110 has a range of 300 kilometers (185 miles). He claims it can pin-point targets at sea, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran's arsenal.
Muslim Brotherhood establishes militia inside Syria
Calling itself the "Armed Men of the Muslim Brotherhood", the militia has a presence in Damascus as well as opposition hot spots like Homs and Idlib. One of their organisers, who called himself Abu Hamza, said that he started the movement along with a member of the Syrian National Council (SNC), the opposition alliance.
US officials warn of swine flu outbreak at fairs
US health officials on Friday warned the public to be careful around pigs after an outbreak of flu among visitors to county fairs. The virus does not appear to have evolved to the point where it spreads easily among humans, but it does contain a gene from the pandemic H1N1 flu that sickened millions worldwide in 2009 and 2010.
Saudi Arabia: Soldier shot dead in Eastern Province
A soldier has been shot dead and another injured during a clash with protesters in eastern Saudi Arabia, according to state media. An interior ministry spokesman said that a security patrol was fired at by rioters on a motorbike in Qatif. A protester was also killed in a firefight following the incident, according to news agency AFP.
Syrian army moves on rebels in Aleppo, Damascus
Syrian forces stormed the last rebel stronghold in the capital Damascus in tanks and armored vehicles on Friday and blasted artillery at rebels in Aleppo, where the United Nations said the army was preparing a massive assault.
'Russia sends navy vessels, marines to Syria base'
Moscow is sending three large landing ships with marines aboard to a Russian naval facility in the Syrian port of Tartus, Russian news agencies quoted a source in the general staff as saying on Friday. The source said each ship would have up to 120 marines on board and that the vessels, already in the Mediterranean, would arrive in Tartus by the end of this week or early next week.
